i understand the criticisms of OBAA, like fr i do, but it was the best movie that deserved every award it got man idk what yall were expecting

This movie has me dying for more original black films set in the past that are primarily about us. Like black characters with real drama amongst themselves.
There are aspects of the setting imposing itself upon them, since it's the south in the 1930s, but it happens naturally and on the periphery of the main plot.
I don't know why this is the only film that has ever done that for me. Where the characters were crafted with care while being shaped by, but not relying on the historical setting.
