Yes, but a lot of public domain works are over 100 years old. There is no reason to keep the copyright going forever because the works authors themselves do not last forever and said works often fall into extreme obscurity. Plus we get new takes and revitalized stories and works out of it. I.E golden age disney movies like Alice in Wonderland.
