Who would've thought the Mormon GOP would actually be responsible for one of the best ideas put forth in government in the last decade

Yes we can all agree Mormonism and the Utah GOP are garbage.

How about we also be level headed and acknowledge that social media is probably the most damaging thing to the mental health of kids in today’s society, instead of just blatantly dismissing this because it’s coming from people you usually disagree with though?

its insane that theres no federal law which allows parents to be in charge of their kids data and this is only on a state level. absolute insanity. a lot of people angry at this type of policy are still stuck in thinking the internet is like it was in 2008.

Not really a bad thing in the long run. Social media continues to prove itself to be more and more harmful by the day.

    Eh.

“ The bills will give parents full access to their children's online accounts, including posts and private messages.”

Idk how to feel about that because honestly as a teen that would’ve just been insane. Imagine growing up as a teen and your parent has access to all your texts, DMs, etc

Like yeah it means good rather than harm but that level of surveillance while growing up can be just as harmful and dangerous

I mean I don’t completely disagree with this

Same time, if I had a daughter I’d be thankful that it would make her think twice before sending nudes to some ol wanker.

The main thing I’m in favor of from this policy is just the general idea of attempting to restrict/limit the time kids spend on social media when their brains are no where near capable of dealing with all the negative side effects of it (it’s harmful to adults too, but at least they have developed brains to better understand the consequences).

My concern with this especially in ultra conservative Utah is more harm than good and parents who impose the ridiculous s*** on kids

Like a parent who is trying to find evidence of a closeted LGBT teen by going through social media now can watch them and literally make sure they never engage in any LGBT content.

Or as simple as a kid who listens to Hip-Hop and posts on KTT and has Mormon parents who want to refuse to let them engage in that culture.

The stories of the kids meeting up with a predator online and getting kidnapped are kinda 2000’d and rarely happen anymore, whereas the stories of teens using internet communities as safe spaces compared to their real world are wayyyy more common.

Ok these are some really good counter points to the whole surveillance of online messages to make especially in a state like Utah.

I still feel big time like the magnitude of studies that suggest social media apps like FB, Insta, Snap, Tik Tok, etc. are harmful to all ages way outweighs any pros. Not to mention this doesn't prevent youth from using the internet, just from using social media platforms.
