Sure the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is better than the chip in all the non Vision Pro headsets (e.g. the Meta Quest 3) but damn they couldn't have pushed for an OLED display of some type

If you're already around the $1000 price, push it a bit higher & go OLED. It makes bigger difference when you're in an entirely enclosed space. The PSVR2 is ~400 bucks & uses an OLED display

I got a VR headset for 80 bucks that will be able to do 97% of the stuff this can do

I'm not sold on this unfortunately & the Steam Machine is laughable
I respect the great software they've made to optimise their hardware but both projects let me down
I hope everyone who would think of buying a Steam Machine just buys a BC250 for 20% of the price instead

steam controller is a letdown too. 250hz polling rate for $100 is laughable when you can get 1000hz controllers for less than $50. only worth it if you love the trackpads but at 250hz it's not even responsive enough for anything but desktop s*** unless you're a casual ig but I need 1000hz minimum. gyro feels choppy as f*** at that low polling rate too

all their hardware been underwhelming and overpriced as f***

now that the dust has settled on the frame, every steam hardware release after the deck has been honestly pathetic. the steam controller is pretty much the coolest thing but it's limited by what i discuss in this post. the steam machine is laptop hardware converted into an overpriced non-portable box, basically just an overpriced mid tier pc with neat software innovations that really could've just been an email, and the frame is an overpriced mid tier vr headset that upcharges its basic functionality for the $60 accessory kit, with the best thing about it being the innovations valve brought and is bringing to arm so it can play x86 games.

yeah the silver lining is all the amazing software stuff coming out of this, which im not discounting and im very grateful for and i use every day as a linux user, but if the best thing about your hardware releases are the software, maybe you should think about sticking to software at least until the slop crisis is over (assuming they let prices come down after the slop bubble pops)

crazy part is if they were cheaper i doubt it’d even matter but they’re all just stupidly expensive which makes any criticism more valid

steam machine is literally the best at what it does lmao

access to your entire library, can emulate every generation up until the ps3, even runs most of the ps5 exclusives fairly well without upscaling (granted if they’re actually optimized), its literally a pc, and free online. it unfortunately got gimped by ai and the fact that it cant play certain games online like CoD and fortnite (but this is more of a linux thing if anything.) always people that dont own or use the thing saying its bad lol

steam controller is also pretty good too it has the perfect amount of heft to it, really good texture around the whole controller so that it doesnt get slippery, tmr sticks, satisfying feeling back buttons, and it probably has the best battery life ive ever used on a controller, its VERY rare that i have to charge this thing. i do think the bumpers and triggers couldve been a bit better but they arent bad really

vr sucks so the frame is a total waste, not even sure why they bothered making another one of these things

The price kills the Steam Machine when you can build a comparable or even better mini pc for considerably less money. Size and noise levels are the only real leg up over DIY versions.

Steam controller is great though. I'm happy that's the only new valve hardware I caved on

i didn't see what that dude says bc he been blocked, but it reeks of valve shill and someone overall new to pc gaming/not aware of the superior options out there. dude literally mentioned "tmr joysticks" as if you can't get an 8bitdo or gamesir with tmr and 4x the polling rate minimum, like better than the steam controller in every way save for the touchpads for much less than the price of the SC. and as i've said many times the touchpads are definitely a great and unique feature and i made use of them a lot on the deck especially for FPS (surprisingly underrated use case for them), but are held back by the low polling rate (deck also has this probelm) and not worth the price alone unless you absolutely need them. i literally have one not that it even matters because the idea that you need to own the product to critique it is peak consoooomer moron.

and you're right, even in the slop era you can build a better linux gaming PC for less, with a similarly sized case and sound profile. my fractal terra is an all AMD "steam machine" on steroids and the fan is quiet enough, doesn't ever bother me let alone over the sound of literally anything playing from my sound system. sure the SM is smaller but like... idc? my case is the perfect size for a living room pc too. that's not enough to justify the rest of the SM issues at all.

if it were priced properly i'd be all over it, but the price changes everything. i can't even recommend the deck anymore at that insane price for that old ass hardware and anyone who has an issue with anything im saying is pretty much a valve sycophant. they're lambda branded disney or nintendo adults basically

i feel like people that always say that never factor in that you would most likely have to look for used parts to even match the price of a steam machine or less, which isnt a bad thing but like a rx 9060 xt for instance would already be half the cost of this and good luck trying to find DDR5 ram for a reasonable price lmao

at best you would be saving like $100-200

Polling rate definitely sucks for how expensive it is. I have a gamesir g7 with 1000hz polling and you're 100% right, they feel better to play with. Dumb for valve to drop the ball on that

But I feel like the average person picking up the steam controller doesn't really care. If they did, they'd already be buying the alternatives. The "steam deck layout in a controller" is the main selling point people gravitate towards. The back buttons are what do it for me, I map Y X A B to them in pretty much every game

It's basically the Apple effect for PC Gaming

Steam has a monopoly & a cult following.

$100-200 could get you a steam controller and a game

I still think it's great hardware overall, just wish they didn't have to release it with everything going on. Would've been killer around a $800 price point. I was looking for a perfect tv pc for months before it was announced, hit every single box but price

i wont deny my valve bias but they genuinely do right by the consumer better than their competition by a large margin whether its customer service, refunding, sales, even letting you have their OS or cad files for free and that holds a lot of value

even if its unfortunately for a very ugly and unreasonable price point

Them announcing today they're moving towards personalized game sales instead of user wide is not a great sign

But that's the first big misstep in a long time. I don't think they're going full apple anytime soon

and mind you you don't need the device itself to get the benefits. i own an ARM handheld (odin 3 ultra) running armada, ARM steamos like linux distro, that has massively benefitted from valve's work in the ARM space with lepton, proton arm, fex etc and i will never buy the overpriced mid that is the frame lmfao. not to mention my actual linux pc

for that price you could get multiple BETTER controllers than the steam controller or more games and a controller tbh
