    Best album of 2018

I ran the Nipsey thread on KTT and everyone would hate but when Victory Lap dropped, it was pretty much met with nothing but good feedback(for the people that actually listened)

Still so sad we lost him man

It's so touching coz if your were tracing back to the album announcement, you know how long he's been working on this

The projects I heard from him prior (Crenshaw and Mailbox Money) were cool but I was so blown away by how next level VL sounded. You could tell he took his time and crafted a fantastic album on his own terms, I was excited to see what he would do next.

Album was originally supposed to be released in December 2012

Had a cover out, a lead single out and everything

probably wouldn't have been as good if it dropped back then tbh
victory lap sounds very timeless i'm glad he took his time with it

It wouldn’t have sounded anything like Victory Lap now

But it still would’ve been very good. He ended up releasing it as Crenshaw but just with extra tracks added

That’s what’s so interesting about some of his mixtapes

The Marathon was mostly tracks that were supposed to be on his debut when he was on Epic
Crenshaw was mostly tracks that were supposed to be Victory Lap
Mailbox Money and Slauson Boy 2 were tracks that didn’t make Victory Lap

TMC and the Bullets series were the only mixtapes that were ever made with the intention of being a mixtape

All Get Right, Face The World, Blessings, Summertime In That Cutlass, Change Nothing, Face The World and Smoking With My Stylist were the basis for Victory Lap

Rap Niggas was also pretty much done as a song since 2013

He was gonna sign to Mayback Music with no advance but full royalties and ownership of his music, along with creative control since the album would pretty much be done before signing. Rick Ross was on board but when Ross went to his label reps they wouldn’t give Nipsey that kind of deal and so it fell through and he released it as Crenshaw

Then he was close to releasing Victory Lap and he had a convo with a big label exec (forgetting who it was specifically) and they told him the most dangerous thing about an album is good songs. Great songs are obviously good and bad songs are easy to spot, but an album full of good songs is not memorable. That made him scrap most of what he had done for Victory Lap (outside of I think he said 5-6 songs) and he went and finished the album specifically trying to make sure there were no “good” songs on it, only great songs.
