  • Any1 do video effects for work? Im a novice in after effects (computer sucks too much to use it properly), but i work in image a***ysis/deep learning so i feel like its a natural transition. I also like making particle simulations and other 3d/2d art using touch designer and photoshop.

Do i need to go back to school if i wanna have a shot at this? Tbh this s*** would be my dream job

  • I got a math/coding background ideally i wanna get on the algorithmic side, like rly going low level and making insane algorithms maybe like after effects plugins etc

I worked in reality television for years. if you wanna go back to school just do some community college courses so that you'll have access to technology to build a portfolio. if access to that sort of computing power is already not an obstacle for you (though it seems like it is) than you can learn a lot of this stuff by yourself, but that requires the self-discipline.

Tbh my main limitation is a lack of footage and computer storage space. But i think imma just try to find artists with footage to practice, probably get in my after effects bag, try to build a portfolio at least

Im rly good when it comes to self discipine and creative work, i already spend hours a day on music and having something else to do artistically wouldnt hurt either

  • My dream is to build a deep learning software for video effects. Like you would be able to select modules with different effects and tweak them via text input

My ex was a lead vfx artist for major studios and for shows and movies I’d say the majority of the site has seen or at the very least are very familiar with. I have also done stuff in film. You do not need to go to school. No you don’t need to know blender, that is not used by studios often. Maya, hitman pro and photoshop +after effects are whats usually used. But some companies have their own software thats proprietary to them that they put you through school when you get hired to teach you, but you need to knwo these programs to get the job in the first place.
Having good references from people in the industry help a ton.
Having even a 1 or 2 year certificate from a college to have some sort of official recognized education helps.

The most in demand 3d vfx software right now is Houdini, which is the most complex and code intensive. If you can learn Houdini to a high level you will find jobs.

Also be prepared to move a round a lot, lay offs and changing employers frequently.

But film is a very normal career, with a LOT of money and opportunities, people are often surprised. My ex started when he was in his early 20s and by his late 20s was making 6 figures.

Good luck! My advice would be learn all of those programs to get+ Houdini, get a certificate and get a regular job to tie yourself over in the mean time. In 2 or 3 years youll get a job no problem.

Make a strong portfolio showcasing your abilities, go to film/animation conventions to get portfolio reviews.

Lmk if u have any questions

You’re welcome, i dont want to dox myself or people i know or anything but this is straight game
    Congrats on the phd!
Just pirate stuff everybody does. Piracy is only an issue if you’re selling your work en mass then they can sue you. Nobody cares if you pirate to break in, everyone does.
Pirate the classes and tutorials too, not just the software!

The software is kinda dry and tedious to learn and it takes awhile, so be patient with it and you will get there no problem :)

You don’t need a top of the line computer to do a lot that stuff, but you do need a mid range one for sure.

Probably yea but i feel like i think more like an artist than i scientist, i dont hate research but im also not rly passionate about it
