I was listening to Business Wars and they said something that grabbed my attention: one of the main reasons why Sony created the PlayStation is because they understood how big the video game market was getting and they understood that a new entertainment avenue would really hurt their music business.

Basically the thing here is that every new entertainment avenue that pops up takes away from the control music has in society as that’s valid as much for video games as it is for social media and Youtube. A lot of people who would obsess over music and artists back in the day spend their days now absorbing content from video games, youtube creators, IG/Twitter influencers, etc.

That’s why nobody will ever touch prime MJ or prime Beatles for example, music as a whole has just way more competition in the entertainment world than it had in the 80’s and 90’s. Ofc this isn’t the only reason btw, but it’s one of the main ones.

Btw go listen to the Business Wars podcast if u have some free time, pretty amazing listen especially their Amazon vs Walmart series.

    Yeah that and Social media.

There's less of a phenomena when artists can share what they're doing every single day.

Btw this means that as time goes on and we find new creative entertainment pockets, artists will become smaller and smaller

And if we ever find a new potent entertainment option that’s only relying on the hearing part of things, it may be time to say goodbye to music as a whole

So because people like video games a lot? That’s the reason the music industry is suffering? That’s why some artists won’t be as popular as the most popular singer of all time?

    Lmao ok

    Examples?

I also just am a partisan of progress. Whatever happens to the entertainment world happens, it’s progress.

Music and Video Games are not exclusive really

You can listen to music and play a video game whereas other forms of media like television, movies etc don’t really lend itself to that

The two aren’t going to step on each others toes that drastically
