They are antagonists but not a primary antagonist in the same way that like The Governor was in Season 3 of TWD or Negan in the later seasons

In shows like this usually one of the human characters becomes the primary antagonist as the story progresses

Lol an antagonist doesn’t have to be an individual tho? It’s any force, thing or person in the way of the protagonist goal.
Disaster movies it’s the big storm. Sci fi movies a lot it’s the technology like HER for example. Jaws it’s… the shark lol. It can also be a group of people, Parasite it’s the rich family not just one specific person.

In this particular case this is Carols story, currently. In HER story, Z is the antagonist, that’s how she views it. Yes Z is the embodiment of the hive but Carol views Z as “different”, as the face, as her person specifically, even tho she’s wrong. So this person Carol is imagining (whom is in the body of Z) is the antagonist in Carols story. She feels that she fell in love with Z and that Z played her, even though she knows and should know the entire hive played her.

For us as the viewers we should see the hive as the antagonist with Z being the face of that because that’s true to Carols story.

This is the way I see it:

In The Walking Dead, the main antagonistic force was the zombies obviously, but then as seasons progressed a human character was introduced as the primary antagonist: Shane in S2, The Governor in S3, Negan in S7-8, The Whisperers in the final seasons, etc.

Antagonist can change for sure and I’m not doubting that. But currently as it stands, yes on a technical level the hive is the antagonist, with Z being the face in Carols story.

Whether she’s an individual or not that doesn’t change the fact that she’s the primary chaperone in Carols life.

Ask this, the hive has been using manipulation tactics to disarm Carol. Would the exact same manipulation work if Carols chaperone was a male instead?

I’m just not following this idea that “a human has to be the primary antagonist”…. The primary antagonist in Terminator is The Terminator lol, that’s not a human what so ever or an individual. It’s a robot that a group of humans designed it to do what it does. What’s the difference?
