I made that thread and you bringing up Big Fish Theory vs Yeezus beats made me revisit it and its a pretty goods album, maybe even underrated. Very unique soundscape

He do got hella solid discography even if he’s just clocking in to work when he raps lol

Him being so adamant against “playing the game” is why he’s underrated though

But what is even “the game” in 2017-2026

  • easily one of the best of his gen. pure talent right from the start too, he had a crazy pen right from the very beginning

  • Strong discography, every project is great

nah he doesn't have the image or sound for true crossover success.

just a horrible take. beyond being an extremely talented mc and songwriter who brings a unique perspective to LA street life and gang culture he takes real risks when it comes to sounds and concepts on each album and delivers each time.

  • He solid but had the talent to be the best rapper and f***ed it off

  • Great artist

meh I think all of those things helped him build his career and stand out at first but over time he just became one of those rappers that has the potential to take it to another level but can't put the pieces together.

Pretty sure even he realizes that otherwise he wouldn't be trying to do s*** like the vince staples show.

He's extremely lucky to have come up in the era that he did around the people he came up with otherwise he would be like a post-Isaiah Rashad TDE or Dreamville tier artist.

That's where his talent level is. Nothing wrong with that. Plenty of artists more talented than him that could only dream of the career he's had.

also I wouldn't call anything he has done in music taking a risk tbh

I respect this take even though I disagree.

Overall fantastic lyricist. Freestyles, storytelling, concepts, all top-tier. Great run to start (2015-2021), last three project were meh, the Alchemist project leaked classic makes up for those last three.

Rappers have like a 5 year window to turn the eccentric unique “he’s so different he finna take this s*** to the next level” s*** into a Tyler Kanye Drake esque trajectory or they end up like Jay Elect Lupe to where only the people who were there for that peak moment of promise respects what they are

Canibus was the first one of these types although he got it the worst out of anyone named lmao

You can't take money from Coca Cola and Netflix and try to act like you're "against the system". I remember hearing a lot of potential in summertime 06 but unfortunately it never really amounted to anything. Like someone else said the fact he has been able to remain somewhat relevant should be a blessing for him. Big fish theory was his last decent project

i remember him saying something about making music for films years ago but in context of his burger flipping comments i look at that s*** mad different now that you bring it up lmao

  • Asking Vince if he's overrated and receiving the flippant sound bite which will get more spins than his last song

Yeah Vince, like a few others came up in that late blog, pre streaming era where they could grab a good core fanbase and also gain enough brand recognition amongst casual listeners that allows them to still feel fairly relevant in 2026.

An artist way more talented could debut in the few years before or after him and not have nearly as long of a career as him.

People underestimate how good coming up in that era was for artists careers and not just rappers.

His personality also does a lot of the heavy lifting. I'm sure the majority of people sharing Vince Staples clips in 2026 have never listened to a Vince Staples album front to back.
