I did the same (Chicago to LA) with the same goal of traveling more. Def see the sunken city. That was my fave part of the trip. LAMCA is cool too. Mostly just rode bird scooters walked around west hollywood and took edibles

I went in 2018 and from what i saw, the homeless are no more numerous than here in Chicago. Definitely go to Santa Monica pier and the Observatory at night. Downtown is ok but not as impressive as Chicago. Dont be afraid to take the metro they have. Imo better than the CTA

I’ve been to LA a few times. I always have a blast. I usually stay on Hollywood Blvd. People are really friendly and I never had any issues. Six Flags is amazing. Definitely hit up Venice beach. LA has some amazing food. Stout is a great burger place with good beers. See a movie at the Cinerma Dome. Take a hike on the canyons.

great scenic drive is taking Mullholland drive from one side to the other. winding hills - wild hillside houses, Lots off cool look out points you can park at , some have more space to explore than others. We stopped at this exact one lol - We were staring at the house at 2:28 imagining the people that live there and if they are like roommates or if its like multiple apartments.
