Well, there's only 1 week left in the winter anime season so I suppose its time for me to pretend like cartoons aimed at manchildren (and sometimes actual children) can be art, and a post few things from this season's visually worthwhile shows.
Princess Connect! Re:Dive Season 2
Every year there's usually an episode or two of anime where the best animators in the industry, attracted by the prospect of working alongside an exciting young creator, all come together to work on a single episode. These episodes are so tempting that animators, by listing themselves in the credits under a pen name, will sneak away from their exclusivity contracts to work on them. Episode 4 of Princess Connect! is one such episode. It was Takahito Sakazume's debut storyboarding and directing a full episode, and after seeing his ambitious storyboards its no surprise that so many skilled animators wanted to test themselves with animating his vision. Great camerawork and awesome sense of scale in this scene.
Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi o Suru / My Dress-Up Darling
It's a Shouta Umehara anime. Animation producers may not get the same glory that directors or animators get, but they're just as vital to the visual success of a show. Over the course of his career Umehara has scouted and built a wide network of talented young animators that he knows and trusts, and wherever he goes they go with him. So with Umehara on board it really isn't a surprise that Bisque Doll has the staff it needs to excel at delicate character animation.
Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku / Akebi's Sailor Uniform
Megumi Kouno's obsession and skill with character, hair, and fabric animation is no secret, and having a veteran like her in the supervisory role of Chief Animation Director for the anime adaptation of a manga that is equally obsessed with body movement, hair, and clothes was a match made in heaven.
Akebi-chan also brought on a nice set of Episode Directors who did a good job of evoking a sense of intimacy; Shouko Nakamura's episode 3 and Moaang's episode 7 in particular were standouts.
See y'all in like 3 months after the spring anime season ends I guess? Or maybe not, there's a very real possibility that nothing worthwhile releases next season.
Movie?
Pretty sure it's from the music video for Element - Kendrick Lamar.

Damn never seen it and I love that song
The way y’all can find 5+ stills from said movie and post them here but can’t manage to also type the name you just put into google images is really frustrating
I come here time to time to find something new and cool but whenever y’all don’t source the material I don’t even wanna quote and ask bc that’s what y’all want instead of naming it in the first place
CAN Y'ALL POST THE NAMES TOO, GOD DAMN
Abre los ojos
Not gonna sugarcoat it - this spring season f***ing sucked from a production standpoint, and the upcoming summer season is probably gonna suck just as much. The vast majority of industry's major talents are likely locked away working on projects such as Yama no Susume: Next Summit, Mob Psycho 100 III, and Chainsaw Man, which are all airing during the fall season.
Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Ultra Romantic / Kaguya-sama: Love is War -Ultra Romantic-
I'd hesitate to call Kaguya-sama stunning, but I can't help but mention it due to its sustained excellence in storyboarding over the course of its three seasons. The show's consistency is largely due to core staff members returning for each season, including director Hatakeyama Mamoru. Having worked at SHAFT during the studio's golden age of making wacky comedy anime, Hatakeyama is completely at home directing a romcom like Kaguya-sama. Whether it's elevating jokes through his creative visual gags or conveying the characters' raw emotions, Hatekeyama will succeed with flying colours - and as long as he sticks around, Kaguya-sama will remain one of the most interesting series in anime.
God, that was a hard post to make. Anime really is best when it's actually in motion. I'll be back in four weeks to talk about some Hiroto Nagata clips I guess.
