that’s fair
it’s been a minute since i’ve really done it i get a lot of plugins free from my job so it’s been a minute
Yeah ive def done that before with badly recorded vocals now that i think about it.
I wonder though if youre making the vocals too loud on the high end at this stage, if youre saying you think your vocals end up too harsh?
Yea i think ur probably right, its a bad habit ill see if i can find a different workflow
I did recently stop boosting high end with eq before running it thru autotune, i think it sounds a lot better now

i know u didn't ask for this advice, but i only boost as an absolute last resort - try cutting what you don't need and then turning the channel up instead. When you boost like that you're also boosting any imperfections/reflections of the recording, and it's easier to mitigate that with cuts and compression to get the intended result.
Think of boosting as essentially adding really small amounts of gain to those frequencies - Gain is essentially harmonic distortion deployed in very small amounts so when you're boosting like a bedroom recorded vocal - you're adding to really small amounts of distortion to your room tone and the reflections in the recording.
If you do want to boost the highs just add to the airband (20k) and never more than 3-6 db
But I always leave my eq as my absolute last thing in the chain
my chain - i change it a lot but this is what im doin
1073 -> cl1b -> saturn (suuuuper light) -> la2a -> soothe (depends on the recording quality) -> hoffa iq eq (really good but i don’t see anyone using it) then pro-q with a lot of midside stuff
effects are up to the song, I like the ams reverb a lot, sometimes i do ocean way or capitol chambers, sometimes various plates. Chorus i use minimal audio flex chorus or uad brigade chorus on a send
this is assuming melodyne etc has already been applied to the vocal
saturn is a great idea too, i have it but i never used it on vocals
might need to run soothe 2

you can always just remix it and put it out again
or just tag me in a post if you need advice - i might not see it, or have time to dive deep but can send you helpful info

soothe 2 and gulfoss can save s***ty recordings honestly
havent used bloom from oek yet but it looks interesting to me
its good to think of your chain as different subsections effecting different things

yea tbh i dropped my mic a few times so im thinking it might be giving me bad recordings, altho if it is its probably not so obvious that it would make a huge difference. the mic itself is like 300 dollars so i expect it to not be s***

you might have moves some parts tbh-dropping the most expensive mic in the world f***s it up too
Just look into it and honestly think about the way you're recording if it's in your bedroom consider getting some furniture pads and making a light vocal booth just so you're not dealing with so many reflections. Reflections are what'll kill your take faster than anything

I think the reflections u mentioned are rly killing me rn
reflections definitely playing a part i hear the room a lot.
Also it sounds like theres some boost in 2k and up . Idk if thats coming from an eq or a saturator or w/e but imo u don't really need it
if you have some furniture pads double them up and make a little booth. If you have some money to invest get a kaotica eyeball, or something that does the same thing
eyeball isn't a replacement for a studio tho unfortunately
