Drake’s greatest contribution to rap was that he opened the door for rappers to be vulnerable and soft. He took a lot of flack for taking a melodic approach and singing on his own tracks. As evidenced by the original Drake the type memes. This really was an important leap but unfortunately he hasn’t really progressed artistically for almost a decade and him choosing to die on the hill of chart king kinda obscures his actual legacy of influence but oh well.

Drake carried the torch that Kanye lit. It may seem like hyperbole because it was so long ago but Kanye was proto-Drake. The praise that Drake gets for being the sensitive soft dude in rap, Kanye started that wave. Wearing sweaters and raping about how much you loved your mom and putting a teddy bear on your album cover was seen as corny back in the day. What I'll give Drake is he paired that with being a simp. He rapped about being heart broken, simping for women, and being cheated on which was a new perspective, but being a mainstream "soft boy" rapper was only possible in a post-808's era.

also, when Drake eventually does retire, there's nothing we can point at and say "oh that was Drakes wave" or "that's what Drake contributed" he's always sustained a vibe, but never changed/influenced the culture. he was just along for the ride.
