no offense but this is a misinformed take. there wasn't a sizeable republican contingent of kanye's fanbase in 2018, most of the fans he gained back then were left leaning teenagers who empathized with his issues with mental health. they went to great lengths to express their disapproval whenever he expressed himself politically, but they were also willing to be reasonable and assume he had good intentions. the makeup of his fanbase has definitely changed a lot since back then.

i think a lot of the liberal fans he lost were among the older millennial crowd who already had a tenuous attachment to him because of stuff like the TLOP rollout and subsequent concert meltdowns. once he put on the red hat, they had just kinda decided they had enough and tuned out. that's a bigger reason why KTT hates him these days, most people here are 30+ years old and threw their hands up with kanye years ago.

younger people weren't more receptive to kanye's political beliefs (at least not a serious number of them), they were just more willing to rationalize it and make excuses for him because they hadn't put up with 10+ years of kanye's antics. also because zoomers are more conscious about mental health so they were receptive to albums like ye and KSG where he touched on that subject.

you're right that it's all anecdotal, i can only really speak on what i saw as a neutral observer of those communities during that era. from everything i saw, it was mostly just earnest fans who supported him in spite of the controversy, not because of it. to the extent that kanye had right wing fans, they were an extreme minority and weren't welcome in most fan communities.
