honestly extreme metal you can mostly just determine by if the vocals are harsh or not. and the instrumentals get more intense too but the vocals almost always follow it. I feel like thrash is on the borderline of extreme and not, a lot of it def. is and its the style that all the first more extreme ones developed from anyway

lot of different approaches to doing harsh vocals too
