I hate to say this, but I actually think Frank is expecting at least some of his fans to go broke trying to get this stuff because he's left them so desperate.
And i think the worst part is that a lot of Frank fans are in too deep to snap out of it and may end up doing just that
Frank know damn well none of these Reddit kids are buying a $10,000 ring this ain’t for em
I understand that artists don’t inherently owe their fan base anything but this man literally scammed thousands of people to fund a vision that none of those people could access
What the f***? What the f*** can we do ? We can’t support this
apparently u already supported itby sending him money
We keeping it music cause we’re fans. Stans are a different breed
Same, man. I've legit been telling every one of my friends for the past years that I don't want to hear when they speculate about what he's doing or when they try to let me know he dropped merch.
Not gonna support these kinds of business models and anti-consumer practices. I'll listen to the music day-one if it drops.
This man literally funded his venture off of money he received from fans who purchased expensive merchandise that he still hasn’t shipped
It’s so disgusting talking about how you read luxury magazines seeing things you couldn’t afford and talking down on that condition, only to open a firm that literally pursues the same business point of artificial pricing. You couldn’t even address the trouble you’ve caused your fan base but instead talk about how you only don’t own a yacht because you get seasick.
There’s absolutely no regard for the people who came and gave you this platform of acclaim
His journey into what he calls “hard goods” began with a stint of bohemian DIY in LA in 2019, when he moved a group of 20 craftsmen friends into his house for his “Summit”, a secretive collective dedicated to developing designs. The house was virtually empty, surrounded by an expanse of land. Ocean’s concept was to use the time for experimentation: “We had everyone from horticulturalists to electrical engineers and architects, carpenters and metalworkers. We made tables and chairs, wired the lighting, then started working on other things for the house.”
This entire artistic process seems to be a delusional and frivolous exercise in materialism that’s only furthered by the fact that he totally jipped his extremely dedicated fan base on things that they bought from him
And the entire artificial expensiveness of this HOMER s*** is even more disgusting. How do you do this stuff knowing your audience will not be those who came to you when you released nostalgia ULTRA or Channel ORANGE but rather rich snobs who have nothing better to spend their money on than lab grown diamonds.
It’s like there’s a level of greed being satiated in this business move and not an artistic desire. The pieces aren’t even anything worth writing home about and are a total derivative of KAWS and Murikami and Nigo’s work
shutcho pocket watchin ass up boy shouts 2 Frank... nigga b smarter
It's ok to like Frank Ocean and admire him following his passions, but also realize not everything he does is great/good, just sayin' (see also: Kanye)
good/great relative to what? is selling exorbitantly priced jewelry really less ethical than mass-producing t-shirts made in sweatshops?
everyone is, to some extent, complicit in the unethicality of this system. at that point I think people should just do what they want in terms of art
scamming people w merch isn't cool though

Or maybe there’s a market for what he’s making outside of his casual fanbase
Never thought I’d see the day where fans turn Frank Ocean heel
i don’t think we will stop being fans it’s just kinda f***ed
Are you tryna float that the merch wasn’t priced for profit
No I’m asking if it’s been revealed that the money he made from the merch is what funded this venture
I could make the assumption that the merch was unprofitable hence they didn’t ship anything out and the money is with the distributors/whoever
Another hypothetical could be he got a small cut of the merch profit. And found the funding elsewhere
Or a different hypothetical similar to op could be that he made so much money scamming people that this is one of many ventures to come
HOLDUP SOMEONE ANSWER:
How did Frank use the people’s merch money (2020) when he’s been working on this since 2018?
Cut this bullshit narrative. Y’all think those 20Ms from Apple and songwriting cheques weren’t enough?
All that's missing now is Lorde f***ing up and that'll be the suburban teen fan trifecta of Lana, Frank, and Lorde looking funny
Or maybe there’s a market for what he’s making outside of his casual fanbase
Maybe I should clarify, he's using his esteem in the music industry to expand into a new market. But by doing so after scamming fans out of money with merchandise previously, there's literally not a way I can see that he does this without knowing that at least some of his fans will scramble at the chance to get this for clout.
It's like Supreme or a Kickstarter campaign if the only rungs on the prize ladder were the $10K options for the rich guys.
All that's missing now is Lorde f***ing up and that'll be the suburban teen fan trifecta of Lana, Frank, and Lorde looking funny
Lorde f***ed up by being Lorde wym
Also using lab grown diamonds and recycled silver is terrible. Silver tarnishes badly if anything recycled gold is better but gold gets recycled all the time in jewelry industry so it's even something to brag about

I think that narrative is a stretch, but I definitely do not think it's a stretch to theorize he may have done singles/merch in 2019 as a way to help fund this.
You can have an idea in 2018, go over budget, and accomodate.

Very fair
