Enjoyed reading this, definitely can see the comparisons to "Air". I'm very bias towards Kobe being my favorite ball player oat.

WRITING WISE (which wont have an affect on the film) I didn't care for the constant reminders "notice this is the first time Joe calls him Kobe and not Bean" or "Remember a few pages ago Coop told Kobe to never apologize". I feel like another draft could've did the script better.

Also they should hire someone to punch up the dialogue, a lot of the s*** talking banter was cliche "Schools out, rugrat" lmaooo who tf even talks like that? And Kobe's mom felt undercooked and cliched too as a character and more so just a bunch of "My son is going to be great, where ever he wants to play we will support"

Kob was first up to do uncut gems in the KG role. (I believe he actually wanted to direct it too, which is why it fell apart). But the synergy is there

Only interested in this if they portray the real Kobe “stubborn anti social hoops obsessed d*** head”

If they re just catering to the “mamba mentality!” Stan crowd with glaze and fiction like straight outta Compton this movie can kick rocks

  • Benny Boy

    Is Shaq in this

Shaq is not in it. They only mention him like once or twice “oh yall tryna make a move to trade for Shaq”

Vlade Divac is in it tho!

Didn’t you just describe the mamba mentality?

But yeah they showcases how obsessed Kobe was with ball and wanting to only play for the lakers. He didn’t wanna go party or nothing. Only the prom with Brandy (but that was like a news report they showed for that scene)

What I mean is even his spoiled brat moments and flaws like refusing to shoot or talk to any of his teammates for months gets glossed over as “just mamba mentality”. Same happened with mj
Obv if he’s the main character they gotta Hollywood it up a lil bit still lol

Sounds like it could use another draft or two, the way you described it above sounds like one of those wholesome Disney channel original type b ball movies

Yeah I think it really needs one. I could easily fix the banter issue. The “schools out rugrat” took me out lmaooo

I think the real problem is they knew how to get down the dialogue of the white execs (cus the movies mostly about the GMs and scouts trying to get Kobe) but didn’t know how to write the black characters

Also Kobe isn’t the main character. John Nash is.

Kobe has a good amount of scenes and they show his determination to play for the Lakers but it’s most about the guys in the suits trying sets deals and what not

Either get a writer specifically to handle the players or consult some nba trash talkers from that era like kg, gary Payton etc Far too many hoop movies use that stock pg rated “you reach I teach” trash talk lol
