It seems like every conversation surrounding hip hop and rap music is always about the numbers and first week sales nowadays.
Talks about music quality and writing are becoming rare. Its almost as if people become fans of someone's music based on how many units they sell. Am i pessimistic or has it always been like this.

50 started that. Nigga use to be obsessed with numbers and would clown people sales all the time. Actually I wouldn’t say he started it but he’s a big reason why people care about numbers now.

Nah I listen to old Jay-Z and he talking records sales and flop artists back in 90’s.

Seeing him clown on people made you wanna pay attention to sales. 50’s main thing during his prime besides quality was numbers, he made it an event. That’s just when I noticed fans slowly starting to care about numbers. Then the 2007 sales battle helped as well.

I get it why the artists would be invested in the sales. I just don't understand why the fans are so invested
