Forrest Swords score was cool. Wish they had more ideas for it than just the phone montages, but those were also cool. Looks like they actually filmed in a real location. Very cramped. Could've used a dash of d***gie visual language considering all the substance abuse, but they had ideas. The drone shot being revealed as an actual drone was a laugh.

As for the plot, I didn't expect it to get so noir. He's the guy caught between a rock and a hard place by mistake. Embroiled in conspiracy. Who to side with, who to double cross. Also reads like him struggling with his own vice. Going cold turkey being the way out.

I don't think it says much about prison though. Who is running that place? The guards are like camp counselors and social workers? They aren't complicit? You can just run around stabbing people without recourse but contraband is life or death? Bit ridiculous.

I don't have an issue with the culture of complicity, but having stakes under those circumstances is difficult. The inmates run the asylum, but this guy is walking a tight rope? There's dissonance there to me. They remedy it by putting him between the prisoners, but the prison itself is incoherent.

Characterizing "underfunding" and "employment problems" as paramount issues for prisons also overlooks a film about people inside victimizing each other. That would seem to be the issue here. We're watching a guy who ruined his life dealing d\*\*\*\* continue his d\*\*\* habit on the inside. They want to release him to make room, and at no point did they address the problem. No rehabilitation occurred. Forget the efficiency of the process. What does it accomplish?

And I have had many long talks with someone who represents people on the inside, visits them, etc. You can make a documentary that doesn't address those issues. Fidelity isn't the problem. It's how you frame everything and to what end. This is ultimately just a "turn your life around" movie. That's the message.

And the only video I've seen inside a UK prison was the guard having s***with the prisoner. That was realer to me than the guard in this movie playing camp counselor.
