π€βοΈ Another Round of Some Song Fun facts:
The brass during the instrumental only parts is layered with an electric guitar, and a vox-like synth is layered on all of it. Thats how I also get the bending effect and "wah-ouh" voice at the end of every 4 bars.
The bass is a custom 808 I made. The bassline in the intro is a bass guitar and synth bass together, but then flips into the booming 808 bass for the rest of the song for contrast. While playing with one of the project's concept idea of past and future. The 808 bassline pattern for instrumental only parts are the same as bass guitar synth bass intro - I always wondered why don't people try to use 808s in a more traditional-like way, well I did it and its what gave its unique characteristic.
I wanted the pattern of the basslines to sound like a rolling tidal wave and an earthquake, it's a "rolling" effect I like to call it. And I think it's what gives it the "serene aggressive" feel to it. The bassline also only partially follows the brass pattern then does its own thing within it's loop. I don't like fully parallel production and singing that is so on the nose and follows each other to the tee. I'm not the first one or the last to feel like this or to play like this. There's plenty of examples in contemporary music of both structure ideas, I just fall into the more individualistic idea of rhythm and melody.
I wanted the song, lyrics and singing io feel like a climax of coming to a crossroads for a person that has to decide what path they really want to lead down. I wanted it to feel like a soundtrack to a person that has to do dirt for a reason. A "sympathetic reasonable villain" that also has a understandable/valid reason why they're doing what they're doing - like a criminal that is just trying to feed their family, or a person that currently has no choice even if they don't like it - that are now trying to do or thinking of doing what's morally right (hence the common saying of the song in church and in general, walking in a new light). The way I vocalize the stretching of words and how I go in and out of this aggressive-like along with this questioning/reasoning-like form of delivery throughout the whole is meant to emphasize that feeling and idea.
I wanted the song to feel personal and direct, but also open ended and applicable to events to the average person even if it isn't exact. The song is also based on personal events n emotions of myself and some irl family/friends.
I had the instrumental brass/guitar/synth-vox parts of the song that happen before verses come in for about half a year. I didn't know what else to do with it but I kept the session and layout cuz I thought it was hard. I was either gonna put it in a loop pack to sell, or give to one of my music friends in the industry if I couldn't figure nothing out. Then earlier this year it all just came together for me after I wrote down loose rough draft lyrics a month prior. The song then was fully made in 3 days - instrumental, initial mixing, full writing and recording. It got it's final mastering last month.
The production, writing, concept, structure, signing, mixing/mastering etc. is all done by me - with some input and advice/review by 2 irl friends and a family member during it's creation. And of course as usual, it's all original, no samples or loop packs. Just my DAW, VSTs, Keyboard/Synth and drum machine.
It's tied as my #1 personal fav song on the album, I'm glad it came together earlier this year and that I kept it for myself.
WALKIN! π πΆπΆ
Also, not just this song but the whole project and even things outside of this project by me -
I do EVERYTHING inside of FLStudio too. Recording, mixing/mastering, layout, structure & production is all done within it from beginning to end. I think I'm on FL22, I didn't upgrade to it latest with all the AI ish because it's so much bloat with things I'm not even gonna use.
Been using FL since FL10 when I was 14 in high school shout out to the homie for the crack copy back then. I never bounce to protools, Ableton, Studio One etc. It's all literally just stays in FL till the audio rendering.
Even when I get paid to this day to mix and produce/do instrumentation for others, and when I used to work at a studio for co-production and as a mixing engineer, it is and was all FL
Me n the homie copped this recently
Lil portable pocket synth that is dope to just keep around in a bag or the car and small too, jot ideas or play around with while having some down time - and cheap they're like 40 to 80 dollars they've been around since like the 70s

Theyre a bit more expensive versions you can connect directly to gear and play n record together, but this one I got is just the standalone cheaper one to "doodle" melodies and ideas
is ur name inspired by frank ocean
My fault I just saw this post I apologize π π
No, but I did grow up off of NU and CO Frank in HS, I'm class of 2014
My middle name is legit Denzel from my parents and I used to JUST go by Denzel - I made a beat tape in Highschool under just Denzel on Bandcamp when I was like 15
But then I learned about Denzel Curry and wanted sumn to separate myself from him plus Denzel Washington in searches and mentions
So I was literally drinking a glass of water when I was 17 or 18 in my bedroom and then it clicked to me in my head and to me sounded nice and flowed off the tongue good - I then made a beat tag back then that I thot was dope so it stuck n that I used for a long time including when I got a job at a studio for mixing and co-production n when I used to sell beats on Beatstars n Airbit, "Denzel Waters watered the track" with my voice heavily edited and a play off of watering plants
If u ever heard my beats on ktt1 or few years back on ktt2 when I used to share them it was the tag I used a lot, I don't really use tags anymore tho but some of my older beats I still got around and sell still have it while my really newer ones don't

After I thot of Denzel Waters full name I also thot associating my name with water, which ofc is common asl and positive, would also make my name more memorable/recognizable and more of an attractive impression which also made me stick with it
Boutta go play pool with some music people of collabs and business, hopefully don't make a fool of my self π¬ππ
If ur an artist, producer or engineer - I cannot stress enough how much showing your face irl to people and meeting people in person still being so important both locally and out of town while also going to lil events n local shows n such.
Unfortunately this where a lot of "amateur" artists fall flat since the 2010s and what keeps them from that next step - a lot of ur favs u thot was next up or had potential failed at this crucial step or weren't consistent enough with it. There's always stories about it too when u meet people.

Lost the pool game 1-2 but won a chess match 2-1 played for low money π€π€π
Was great, also got connects to a lot of local ish and the bar owner also does events downtown n he f***ed with me heavy - an old head who owns the bar is also from the Bayarea originally so he was real happy to hear that I am too and became a plug for me, he also DJs for reggae (and sometimes drums) artists and is down to DJ for me which is like the only thing I'm missing and the ONLY thing idk how to personally do ππ
When u do good and help people, people will do good n help u too - they also don't forget

I also got another gift
From a big homie who dropped me off at the event I mentioned in last post, forever grateful πππ£οΈ

Lyrics - A New Light:
They say I'm not a hero I'm the villain
They say I'm not a hero I'm a felon
I've been judged a couple times within my life
I've done a couple things that I wouldn't advise
Walking (walking, walking, walking)
Walking in a new light
Walking (walking, walking, walking)
Walking in a new light
Walking (walking, walking, walking)
Walking in a new light
Walking (walking, walking, walking)
Walking in a new light
I rather be a villain than a victim
I rather be a felon than the symptom
Write my wrongs but some wrongs got me right
When you're on top the mountain is a different height
Walking (walking, walking, walking)
Walking in a new light
Walking (walking, walking, walking)
Walking in a new light
Walking (walking, walking, walking)
Walking in a new light
Walking (walking, walking, walking)
Walking in a new light
I have no skeletons in the basement (walking)
I buried skeletons in a panic (walking)
I have no skeletons in the closet (walking)
I forgot the skeletons in the attic...
Walking in a new light, new light, new light, light
Walking in a new light, new light, new light, light
Walking in a new light, new light, new light, light
Walking in a new light
New light, new light, new light
New light, new light, new light
New light, new light, new light
Idk if u noticed but I learned how to fully do and properly understand side chaining few months ago and it improved the bass parts during the verses so much more on A New Light on the release version compared to the early album copy I sent u months ago @Aquilla
Learned how to side chain while still KEEPING THE PUNCH (that usually a lot of people f*** up on while side chaining) of the bass itself while providing full clarity to the kick and bassline - I used to dislike sidechaining due to how many people half ass it
I still wont sidechain unless I feel like I gotta but it's a new full tool in my arsenal that also imo improved this track so much and the only track on the album that needed it by giving so much more clarity to the "rolling" pattern n effect I created for the bass on this track ππ€
clip to zero or jus like dialing attack and release?
clip to zero or jus like dialing attack and release?
The bass rider is an automated attack and release thats connected to the compressor and limiter
Idk how to really explain it outside of its snapping the range within milliseconds and makes up for the loss of your bass that sidechain brings in while also constantly leveling it out across the board
Sorry i took a while to respond, I wanted to try to find a vid that explains it and this one does pretty good. Ironically barely anyone talks about it and the few that do are lowkey barely viewed vids π

Here's a general use for it on bass, and a general tutorial breakdown from waves themselves

its even used for vocals in some instances although I haven't tried it myself
The one caveat tho is that idk how bassrider and similar-like plugins would interact with long form kicks or more unique kicks, A New Light is the only track I've done this with which uses a short, tight and bright "popping" kick
I'm still not going to be using it as a main tool, but it's great now to have for any potential extreme bass heavy tracks with a lot going on such as my song A New Light
Hope this makes sense and is something useful, I'm not good at explaining really technical without directly looking at the gear and what it's doing such as what it might doing to my project file and how it's currently set up

YOUTUBE VISUALIZER THUMBNAIL PREVIEW:

π¨π¨ DISCLAIMER: The pixel art style of the visualizer is a custom AI overlay that is put over real footage of a homegirl of mine who is a club bartender that thought also thought of the visualizer concept - the AI overlaid pixel on top of the real footage took me 30ish generations to not look like s***, used directed AI to clone variations of her in the pixel art. Then I cut it down to a 5sec loop that I THEN edited frame by frame to fix any AI f*** ups and add more detail + additional art - and then I did many video effect edits such as the flickering lights, distorted CRTV scanlines, color grading, the stars (which are also animated) & whatever else. The AI generations took a few days till I was satisfied, then me doing the frame by editing and effects took me a little over a month
We're ending the single releases with a song that is just about fun with no really-really deep underlying message... but uh, song is inspired by a solo camgirl I used to hang with from time to time off n on - she's great π€
