Aftermathbws_The argument is that Wayne’s actual album discography sucks so people have to bring in other things… tapes, features, unreleased songs. Every rapper has great unreleased songs, look at Nas for example, even game has better unreleased songs than ones in his actual albums, job’s S. Carter mixtape is up there with Wayne’s tapes but no one needs to bring them up because jay has a sold ass discography
or maybe because like no one knows or cares about his mixtapes…
like most other rappers…
you also got to put it into context anyways, those C3 sessions were songs that were supposed to be on the original C3 before they got leaked, and he still churned out a massively influential masterpiece regardless
that isn’t his fault at all, and i don’t see how that’s really an indictment on his legacy at all

like the thing that Wayne does that other rappers can’t is that he brings his own unique thing to literally any beat (at least in his prime, anyways)

S*** like Billboard and reviews is how they keep track of rappers but if you were a rap fan back then you know that Hov was always considered a big dawg
He never sold a mill in a week like other rappers but he was always respected among his peers and revered by rap fans. He’s maintained this same status for a long time and managed to elevate his name while people that were bigger than him slowly started to fall off over time
I was listening to rap during what yall call Jay Z prime of course he was respected and was a big star but fact is he was not the hottest you can't deny that lol
He lasted longer than most of them though

I was a Wayne fan back when C1 dropped, still listen to C1-3, but none of those are 10/10’s and people only bring up Wayne’s tapes because his album discography is patchy at best. It’s far easier to take a hit song with a pre-existing blueprint and “freestyle” over it than to put a cohesive album or even song together. This is why mixtape Wayne >>>> album Wayne

I think you’re putting too much value on albums. You may have a point of just freestyling over someones beat, however got to consider the volume and the fact rappers did not want Wayne destroying them on their own song. Even Jay fell victim to that when Wayne did “Show Me What You Got”, Hov had to question himself if he still had it lol. Wayne’s combination of mixtapes, albums, & features will never be matched again.

mixtapes and free styling are a big part of hip hop culture
it’s only fairly recently that a rapper has to make these insane conceptual thematic albums in order to be considered an “artist” when rapping itself is an art and Wayne is one of the best at it, and it’s showcased throughout his tapes

Bro, kingdom come is bottom drawer jay. Wayne rarely raps about anything he’s just does punchlines most of the time. And while I do like the C3 leaks, and in some instances better than SOME tracks from the album, they aren’t exactly Illmatic (or since we’re talking about jay blueprint) quality

I would argue Wayne was still the biggest rapper at the time. Drake was making noise too but they didn’t drop solo albums that year. DOA, Run This Town, Empire, and On to the Next One all came out that year. I know how much we clown DOA now but at the time that was a major moment in rap. It didn’t go #1 but it def had niggas talking. Hella niggas dropping DOA freestyles
That’s just one example of a moment you had to be there for bc if you look at the comments from new fans now you would think DOA was some wack s*** nobody was fw
In his active years he wasn’t the hottest rapper but when niggas talked about who was making noise at the time Jay always came up. This was every year he dropped an album too

Wayne was just the it rapper at the time, it wasn’t that he was the best, he was just the coolest and best marketed at that time, nothing to do with his tapes (which I’d bet a lot of the general public never even heard) he just caught traction with the right sound at the right time… namely lollipop… which wouldn’t have even been on the album if not for the leaks
