Na not saying he wasn’t but for the niggas saying jay never ran a year…is f***ing fronting
Jay was not running a year that No Ceilings came out
Where do these niggas get their info “ jay was never the biggest rapper” y’all are confusing sells with actual talent….from 1998-2001 only rapper who could f*** with hov was X
Yes so? Point is he was not the biggest rapper from this era
The argument is that Wayne’s actual album discography sucks so people have to bring in other things… tapes, features, unreleased songs. Every rapper has great unreleased songs, look at Nas for example, even game has better unreleased songs than ones in his actual albums, job’s S. Carter mixtape is up there with Wayne’s tapes but no one needs to bring them up because jay has a sold ass discography
or maybe because like no one knows or cares about his mixtapes…
like most other rappers…
you also got to put it into context anyways, those C3 sessions were songs that were supposed to be on the original C3 before they got leaked, and he still churned out a massively influential masterpiece regardless
that isn’t his fault at all, and i don’t see how that’s really an indictment on his legacy at all
like the thing that Wayne does that other rappers can’t is that he brings his own unique thing to literally any beat (at least in his prime, anyways)
!https://youtu.be/-Kcs7P59Wpo!https://youtu.be/8o4xXRX0rpYlike you can’t sit here and just tell me “oh it’s easy to rap on a song with a predefined blueprint on it” when Wayne’s versions were taking precedence over the actual original song
no one else did that and if they did, it was very sparingly
He just copied 50 and dipset formula
Jay was not running a year that No Ceilings came out
he’s one of those NY niggas that gotta defend any rappers from there tooth and nail dont even bother bro
he’s the same nigga that was arguing 50 cent over wayne

It’s because they can only go off of the history given to us
S*** like Billboard and reviews is how they keep track of rappers but if you were a rap fan back then you know that Hov was always considered a big dawg
He never sold a mill in a week like other rappers but he was always respected among his peers and revered by rap fans. He’s maintained this same status for a long time and managed to elevate his name while people that were bigger than him slowly started to fall off over time
I was listening to rap during what yall call Jay Z prime of course he was respected and was a big star but fact is he was not the hottest you can't deny that lol
He lasted longer than most of them though
this thing where mixtapes are not supposed to be counted in an artist’s discography is just hipster backpacker talk at its finest

Everyone of these tracks Wayne ripped for DD3 are infinitely better than Wayne’s version and more recognisable

Facts i hate when i see these kids on here, rewriting history on s*** that i actually witnessed lmao hov was forever that nigga
Gonna hop in and say yes his prime better than Jay’s then hop out cause I know mf about to get salty itt.
Eminem and DMX were on top but Hov was right behind them
Oh yea. That was what they call the “Platinum Era” of Hip Hop. Everyone was going triple platinum during this time
I was a Wayne fan back when C1 dropped, still listen to C1-3, but none of those are 10/10’s and people only bring up Wayne’s tapes because his album discography is patchy at best. It’s far easier to take a hit song with a pre-existing blueprint and “freestyle” over it than to put a cohesive album or even song together. This is why mixtape Wayne >>>> album Wayne
… but, but, but,the C3 leaks f*** outta here
I think you’re putting too much value on albums. You may have a point of just freestyling over someones beat, however got to consider the volume and the fact rappers did not want Wayne destroying them on their own song. Even Jay fell victim to that when Wayne did “Show Me What You Got”, Hov had to question himself if he still had it lol. Wayne’s combination of mixtapes, albums, & features will never be matched again.

i disagree with all of them besides if i ruled the world and dead presidents

mixtapes and free styling are a big part of hip hop culture
it’s only fairly recently that a rapper has to make these insane conceptual thematic albums in order to be considered an “artist” when rapping itself is an art and Wayne is one of the best at it, and it’s showcased throughout his tapes
s*** is just lame man

Bro, kingdom come is bottom drawer jay. Wayne rarely raps about anything he’s just does punchlines most of the time. And while I do like the C3 leaks, and in some instances better than SOME tracks from the album, they aren’t exactly Illmatic (or since we’re talking about jay blueprint) quality
i disagree with all of them besides if i ruled the world and dead presidents
Maybe because you’re a massive Wayne fan
that’s another thing, it’s so easy to just freestyle on a beat and it makes me wonder why no one else besides Wayne got acclaim for doing it?
it’s almost like, idk, he was particularly better at it than everyone else
I was listening to rap during what yall call Jay Z prime of course he was respected and was a big star but fact is he was not the hottest you can't deny that lol

He was speaking about 09 specifically
I would argue Wayne was still the biggest rapper at the time. Drake was making noise too but they didn’t drop solo albums that year. DOA, Run This Town, Empire, and On to the Next One all came out that year. I know how much we clown DOA now but at the time that was a major moment in rap. It didn’t go #1 but it def had niggas talking. Hella niggas dropping DOA freestyles
That’s just one example of a moment you had to be there for bc if you look at the comments from new fans now you would think DOA was some wack s*** nobody was fw
In his active years he wasn’t the hottest rapper but when niggas talked about who was making noise at the time Jay always came up. This was every year he dropped an album too

If freestyling was so easy there would been more rappers on Wayne's level but there wasn't. They tried but the couldn't do it like him
Wayne was just the it rapper at the time, it wasn’t that he was the best, he was just the coolest and best marketed at that time, nothing to do with his tapes (which I’d bet a lot of the general public never even heard) he just caught traction with the right sound at the right time… namely lollipop… which wouldn’t have even been on the album if not for the leaks
