It’s true, I was the old Asian man 😔
Chicken risotto with onions and sun dried tomatoes, roasted asparagus

You made this? Looks very good
Maybe I’m tripping but some raisins in that would probably hit if they were cooked with everything else
Got a recipe to share for it?

ordered the lions head meatball from shanghai time
it was ok
rly salty, not much other flavor to the sauce but the meatball itself wasnt bad imo

i sort of eyeballed his video and made this
i spatchcocked a whole chicken and used that
did 2 inch ginger sliced rather than minced
probably a tbsp dry turmeric
3 or 4 garlic cloves
i think like 5 smaller, roma-sized tomatoes
watercress
3 dashi packets
i actually liked it, it was rly light and warming

okozushi. this spot used 2 do kyoto style temari but stopped which i was slightly disappointed by. theyre owned by the okonomi / yuji ramen ppl.
sort of just ok -- bf thought his was p bland (he got salmon / tuna / ikura bowl), but i thought mine was dece (charred ankimo, maine uni, toro, ikura). my only complaint is that i got 3 slices of toro only, but i suppose thats to be expected at the price point.
i rly liked their pressed mackerel sushi tho, it was v nice. i do think kawabun's might beat it tho since i rly liked the char theirs had, but a bit less traditional i guess)
overall i think its better to just buy their fish and put it together at home so u get the qty of fish to rice u want and maybe slightly warmer rice
win son bakery
milk tea + millet mochi donut
also went on a croissant crawl w some friends
croissants in order of what we hit:
brooklyn ball factory
nick and sons
brooklyn french bakers
left to right: la cabra, librae, boulangerie le fournil
marie blanchere
alf bakery
my personal order:
1. la cabra-- buttery, good flavor, exterior is rly crispy...more crisp than delicately flaky though, interior has good chew and lots of airiness
2. brooklyn ball factory-- everything la cabra has, maybe just doesnt hit on those notes quite as hard
3. nick and sons-- super super chewy, but not as crispy imo as the others. rly good butter flavor
4. alf-- i think the ratio of filling to exterior crunch leans more to crunch and less fluffy interior., another weird thing is i think they go a bit hard on the eggwash, one of my bites had a strong egg flavor which i didnt like. still a good croissant tho. still nice and buttery
5. librae-- i found librae's plain croissant to have a weird sort of slighy burnt flavor on the outside. the flavor of the zaatar croissant sort of seeped into it as well. and lastly, there were gummy bits in it, which is unpleasant. the gumminess is something ive noticed consistently with their pastries, especially the ones with oily baked-in fillings (like the zaatar one or the pain au choc).
6. brooklyn french baker-- lacked crisp, lacked flavor, overall was p disappointing
7. boulangerie le fournil-- one pf friends actually ranks it 3rd and rly liked it, but me and someone else rank it 6th. this croissant is the white bread of croissants. no butter flavor, no fermentation/sourdough flavor, just bready. it does have an excellently flaky exterior, but idk. i needed more flavor
8. marie blanchere. this one was giving costco
non croissants:
bk ball factory also has good onigiri (the chashu one was excellent) and coffees

while we were in red hook for brooklyn french bakers we also tried defontes
roast beef sandwich (kinda bland, beef is good its just bland lol... needed more jus on the side imo. and the fried eggplant on it just tastes oily)
golden boy special -- chicken cutlet, vodka sauce, prosciutto
this was tasty, but wish the chicken was juicier and crispier

pepp, cheese, mortadella slice from shins pizza (was good but not sure how it compares to other la spots. def not better than anything i’ve had in the bay or ny but it’s korean owned and just opened so had to check it out)

al pastor tacos w pineapple from el venado (friend rec this spot by his house. was pretty good. i think the low price has a lot to do w it’s high rating on yelp tho)

carne asada taco + al pastor combo burrito from el taurino (this a nostalgia spot idc if it’s far from the best in la)

ham and gruyère, orange cardamom bun, choco croissant, pecan toffee croissant, almond financier from proof bakery (all so fire and i went right when they opened so s*** was all fresh and warm.. think i like the card orange bun more than the one at tartine. also def one of the better ham cheese croissants i’ve had.)

also had love hour smash burgers and ahgassi gopchang but no photos
kimchi and ban chan in general tastes so much better at la korean restaurants tbh
