how???
food is food
sure
but you're trying to tell me
you don't see anything wrong
with eating chitlins, pig feet, etc.
not a single thing?
I literally said pork is disgusting before.
I feel like soul food is African inspired to some extent tho.
Side note: you think UK niggas got their own version of soul food
never thought about it
but i'm curious now
a few years ago it hit me that not all africans
in the slave trade were taken to america...
still a lot of research to do
there are so many perspectives out there
I literally said pork is disgusting before.
that's why i don't see why you're attacking me lol
i'm just trying to get the swine outta soul food
that's it
all the other stuff i do not care about
Also no I see nothing wrong with niggas eating chitlins and pigs feet cause I know 10 other countries that be eating cow, horse, and pig d*** casually. I personally wouldn't cause I think it's nasty.
People gonna cook and eat anything apart of an animal. Historical context be damned.
Imma say it one last time and hopefully it gets through your head.
It is just food.

Beans on toast
I understand what you’re saying about chitterlings and stuff like that but aside from the cultural context it isn’t really weird to eat something like that
I eat a lot of pork intestines and stuff like that as part of Asian cuisine and it’s just normal food.
Just cus lame white cacs didn’t want to eat these cuts of meat centuries ago it doesn’t mean they were right. They missed out on some good eating
eh
with complete gratefulness and humility that this is the case, i know many black elders who made it to 70-80-90 eating soul food
that being said, everything in moderation
never thought about it

Yeah. A lot of slaves went to the Caribbean and South America.
I got both sides of it because my moms side is Jamaican and my dad is from the south.

on the other hand it is tough to watch folks get further past 50 and always have to eat salads, watch their sugar and drink diet sodas and s*** like that
feel like i'd hate that
why do you think that is?
is it the food itself or the memories associated with it?
probably the second, it’s just something you’re raised on and it has that “homely” feel
it’s called comfort food for a reason, s*** is comforting lol
why should we move past food that has significant historical influence in our community?
Need to move past chitlins tho
why the f*** was this ever a thing to begin with

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why should we move past food that has significant historical influence in our community?
is it a positive influence?

appreciate you sharing your perspective
it is valuable

is there anything that you feel you've learned because of your background that maybe some others would find useful?
is it a positive influence?
because of the history of slavery or how healthy the food is?
i have never liked the "slave food" argument. as if we should be ashamed for making what slaveowners gave us as scraps/trash into something delicious and important. this is our history as people and its not something we should be trying to get away from.
in terms of health i think a lot of black people now are trying to do better. my mom makes soul food pretty often but its not heavily salted or made with excessive amounts of butter/sugar/bad stuff. as we learn better we do better.

with that in mind
can you ever envision a world where the foods that make us feel homely are healthy?
i'm not saying it's gotta be today or tomorrow
but is there hope for someday?

I say I love both cuisines equally but I can say that Jamaica has a lil more range because you had recipes/spices/crops introduced from countries like India, China, etc
because of the history of slavery or how healthy the food is?

the history
of course we shouldn't be ashamed
what we did to it is why we are who we are
but that doesn't take away from the food being slave food
that is what it is
and that's why i feel like we should stop eating it
just off the principle
what do we have to prove
what are we holding on to?
okay, yes we know we can make fire food out of bullshit
but at what point do we use our powers for more than what we've been doing?
to me, saying we shouldn't consider moving past this is saying
"i am okay eating what the masters gave me even to this day"
doesn't matter if we can make it bomb as f***
it is STILL the food that white people didn't want
that just doesn't feel right to me
with that in mind

as far as having no memories to connect the food to, not sure. i think unhealthy food rly is addictive and they gotta outlaw some s*** first before it can happen
far as nostalgia goes, it can be the most boring s*** like oatmeal or eggs and rice, if you associate it with good times and haven’t had it in a bit i think that connection remains. the food is comforting, but so are the memories. that’s just my 2 cents though
