There's no point reading new books. It's better to wait 5-10 years to see which stand the test of time
We should be digging into books that came out on or before 2015* to see what gems we missed, not running to stores for hardbacks
*Which was a very good year, A Brief History of Seven Killings, The Sellout, A Spool of Blue Thread. Wonder what else we missed
This of course is not a comment on the industry and it is an unsustainable practice for publishing, but I stand on the hill that rarely anything coming out today will be worth the 12 hours it takes you read it
Every time I see a notification from you i feel a sense of disappointment
I'm crying
Abdication of personal responsibility is at the core of so many problems. You cannot simply hand wave your actions away. It has never been easier to be vegan. The staples of a plant-centered diet are always cheaper than meat. It is not a struggle to go vegan.
Certain vegan options can be cheaper, however overall, they are not. Especially the quality vegan options. And that's before getting into the discussion of their availability.
Low income communities struggle with the realities of food deserts and lack of grocery stores in general. Something as simple as fruits and veggies can be scarce.
"It's never been easier to be vegan" If you have the access.
"It is not a struggle to go vegan" It is. Especially for those who come from the struggle.

I'll meet you half way and say that it is easy to be vegetarian though, even if you do come from a low income town or community.
As you said, meats can be expensive. So a struggling family might find it easier to forgo meats and opt for more pasta, rice, dairy options, etc

What these posts are making me realize is I have to be way more precise with my words.
And that's on me. Gotta communicate my intent better.
For the majority of people, particularly in the western world, but across the world in general, it's not a struggle to go vegan. If you drive or walk past almost any supermarket, it's possible to make the change without undue financial stress. If there are street markets selling fresh fruit and veg, even better.
And in some places it's fruit and vegetables that are often cheaper, along with the classics like rice and beans.
But if all you got is the cursed combo of Dollar General across the street from the Family Dollar you're up a creek, I will give you that.

Idk my dad smoked weed all my life and so did my grandpa
They’re definitely addicted to weed but I dont see really what harm it did they’re both very successful men
Other d**** have clear downfalls to being addicted to them like death
“Weed makes you lazy”
Well it doesn’t make everybody lazy and even if it makes you lazy and you’re addicted to it then I still don’t really think thats like one of the worst symptoms addiction can bring lol

I agree aside from non-fiction, where a 10 year old book can be incredibly outdated or when an established author with multiple classic novels drops a new one.
Do u feel the same way about music & other media?
I need to think about this fully but my immediate impression is No
An album taking an hour of your time, which you can skip through is less exhaustive. Music offers a great experience to fans in exposing you to as much of it before you commit.
A standard movie, 2 hours, is considered a lot, but you can watch a trailer, or clips. Not that imply that is a standard watching experience but again, there's less time commitment and more consideration to the fan
Also, music & film are: consumed communally tied to events, festivals, discourse experienced simultaneously with the world
Their relevance depends on entering culture when they drop.
If you discovered Get Out 10 years later, it would still be good, but not seismic.
If you discovered TPAB at 30 instead of 20, you’d miss its impact as a cultural moment
It's interesting that no other media has a DNF (Did Not Finish) culture as literature. No one stops an album halfway and announces it or, worse, brags about how they "powered" through. You simply just move on to the next EP or LP
The way publishing is set up is really odd to me but I also think language evolving so much slower than technology plays a big part of it. Yet there are 1 million books published per year in English but only 40,000 albums and 500 major films
The signal-to-noise ratio is wild in publishing
A little jumbled but my first impressions
I dont get why people can’t disagree with people on here without dismissing them like calling me “delu” bc I have a difference of opinion
People are so immature when it comes to discussion on here, everything goes to insults

OMG this is crazy, thank you, will read, and thank you for sending a version I can read
I immediately agree with non-fiction, those are moment-specific and following a big author like that is sensible. Same way we will watch any PTA movie. They don't happen too often
Grits are ass
Stuffing sucks

Much more nuanced take, I respect him for that. Excellent article
Also: "There are other rules. Don’t read fewer than 50 pages in a sitting. The cost of pecking at a book here and there is a lost sense of its narrative wholeness."
Is brilliant. I've inadvertently lived by this rule (mine is 30 pages, with a pause to review). Good to know we all unknowingly share these habits
Found this quote by CS Lewis in the comments:
"It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between. If that is too much for you, you should at least read one old one to every three new ones.
Every age has its own outlook. It is specially good at seeing certain truths and specially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore, need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period. And that means the old books. All contemporary writers share to some extent the contemporary outlook – even those, like myself, who seem most opposed to it."
