From Tyler to kendrick to vince

I feel that the west is really undefeated when it comes to “cohesive” albums in hip hop.

rap from there always strikes the right balance of poppy, conceptual, and alternative.

Even the new game album shows this

Not to mention the rappers who aren’t from LA originally but definitely a part of the canon like mac, isaiah rashad etc .

As much as i love detroit rap or ny rap or atl rap. i first fell in love with hip hop in the early 2010s new school era where this type of hip hop was the norm so I appreciate LA keeping the tradition alive

alternative rap originated from NY though

plus i wouldn't group Zay or Mac with west coast. I can see where you're going with Mac, but Zay is most definitely southern. just because he's signed with TDE doesn't mean he's part of the west coast canon

I know but theyve deviated from that style in the mainstream at least

You have guys like rocky and sub movements like slums or whatever but the west coasts biggest artists do a better job representing for this style more

  • Aug 24, 2022

Yeah I heard them talking about this before the Vince concert.

I've always been an album listener so I appreciate the West Coast for keeping the cohesive projects coming

    Yea exactly

The biggest artists in the west coast are the most alternative ones compared to other scenes

NYC is a close second, and atlanta too in fact

Tbh atl is probably more boundary pushing at times especially 2014-2019 era atl, it’s just that its not as cohesive and polished

Alternative is broad. I consider everyone from young thug to kanye alternative at times

What i mean is that LA artists always seem interested in created high level quality art that pushes boundaries

My theory is that it has to do with hollywood

The culture of movies has probably influenced hip hop from there.

I think that’s why albums from there always have narrative and concept
