It seems like the pulling of the Death Row catalog off streaming left a gap for fans and for people who maybe never explored outside of Chronic. This made me say "That's not right" The catalog should be easily accessible even if a certain rapper is salty at certain artists and wants to revise history.
This is a series designed to put the focus on Death Row.
What made Death Row Records? Well like Motown or Solar (or a apt comparison Rap a lot,Ruthless, Dungeon Fam) they had a in house session musicians. A cast of people from A to Z in the music industry who had worked with A List Artists.
We can also talk about the personnel of Death Row Records.
People might not know because it would be impossible to probably figure out who played on what. But part of the reason why Death Row Records had so much energy was because the musicians added a level of intensity in a rap performance. This type of instrumentation/arrangements/skill level added a depth to it that a lot of labels could learn from. Especially in the age where we are now.
Another thing about Death Row is not just the rapper talent but the vocalists as well. They could pull from a vast well of talent for their projects (And they did) Including people like Jewell, Danny Boy, Nate Dogg, B Rezell, The Jackers
A lot of times the musicians were right next to the rappers. This is something most rappers never experienced. And in some ways it's kind of a throwback to beginning of hip hop in recording studio.
The soundtracks included are the following
Murder was the Case
Above the Rim
Gridlock'd
Gang Related
Dysfunktional Family
Nearly 7 hours of music to choose from including mostly vinyl artwork scans when available. Few things have been added, including the unedited cassette version of Above the Rim.
This is the first in a continuing series in celebrating the re-launch of Death Row and the soon to be released Mount Westmore.
Here's some samples to choose from:
