It's definitely confusing but at the end of the day it's so simple to understand that those people are still human beings who should have a right to live in whatever way they feel comfortable so long as it does not harm anyone without having to be attacked or judged for it because it isn't anyone else's business but their own.
I used to be on that "educate don't retaliate" wave too, but at this point in time, especially with someone who has the means to easily engage and interact with people in that community like WSG, if he's still on that transphobic wave at damn near 40 then he very likely is not changing that way of thinking. No matter how accepted it is becoming.
