  • Persona 3 Reload

Played on Xbox Series S (Gamepass)

After playing the original Persona 5 and then Royal about a year later, I desperately wanted to go back and play Persona 3 & 4. P4 Golden wasn’t available on anything but a PSVita still, and P3 had so many different versions of the game, there wasn’t a “definitive” version of it. P4 Golden eventually came to Steam and then would show up on consoles with Persona 3 Portable, but then rumors started floating around about a full blown remake of P3 was in the works so… I decided to wait until then. And so here we are.

And well…Reload is GOOD. Fully voiced social links, rebalanced Persona compendium, great music, and beautiful aesthetics (which is always a big highlight with this series). The real draw here is its combat, as it’s been completely overhauled to function like P5’s (while taking some aspects of Royal too). Tartarus in the original versions of P3 was notorious for being a pain in the ass because of the games combat. This time around, while Tartarus isn’t the most exciting thing ever, it’s made much more fun.

Not to spoil the story, but it does take its time to get going that’s for sure. If you aren’t the most patient person, I wouldn’t advise playing this (or any JRPG lmao). I will say, the payoff was definitely worth it. Persona 3 has themes of time and death, and to see how each character and social link tackle these ideas was executed very well. Not all the social links are winners, but there’s some really great ones, some of them being the best in the series in my opinion.

Persona 3 Reload is essentially the original game from 2006 if it was designed in the same manner as P5 was with its combat. It’s a giant leap forward that allows players to experience the story without dealing with poor gameplay design decisions Atlus made back then. It’s a remake, yes, but it’s not the complete compilation of P3. There’s no FeMC here. Which I was disappointed yes, but the more I thought about it, it makes more sense why they didn’t. The amount of effort they put into this is substantial, and with Metaphor, the SMTV re-release, and development on Persona 6, something had to go. Think that played a role on why Portable got a modern port in the first place.

I think Reload is a very good game, but I don’t think it’s really fair to me to rate it. At its core, it is a “remake”, but in a medium where the definition of “remake” isn’t definitive anymore, I don’t know what to say. Resident Evil 4 (2023)? Final Fantasy VII: Remake, Dead Space (2023), and Persona 3 Reload are all “remakes” but all of them do COMPLETELY different things from one another, it feels impossible to put into the same category. As far as what Reload accomplishes, I think it serves its purpose as intended: bringing a classic JRPG to play like a modern day video game.

  • beat Ori and the Blind Forest and Cocoon in the last 2 weeks both dope

I've seen a lot of criticism for Cocoon saying it's too easy for a puzzle game but I think that's dumb. To me it's like the same difficulty as sudoku puzzles where there's moments where you're breezing through but then there's still a good amount where you have to bunker down for a second and plan ahead. Such a fun gimmick for a puzzle game, super satisfying.

Finished after 140 hours; beautiful game. Narrative isn’t really worth talking about but I do want to say that there is a large amount of characters in this game and the small interactions between these characters is actually really good.

Presentation and art direction in this game is extremely strong, from the beautiful backgrounds from when you enter battle to the victory screen music and animation when you complete a stage, all of this just leads to a really satisfying and rich experience; special shoutout to the sound design, might not be as good as the sound of blowing up 50 kaijus at once in 13 Sentinels but being close to that is a feat in itself.

The gameplay is really the highlight of the game and you are basically setting gambits/if statements for your units (squad) before they engage in battle and the battle then plays itself out in front of you (which is also why presentation is so important in this game), all the fun comes from this setup phase because there is an insane amount of classes in this game that all do different things and when you combine that with how important equipment is the build varieties in this game just become endless. Economy in this game is also really thought out because each town has limited items and some also have new equipment so you do have to actually think about spending your resources.

Theres also online PvP in this game that gives you limited currency if you win which you can use to get really good items for team building (If you complete 10 fights regardless of W/L you get 200 of the limited currency and this resets every 24 hours so you can still get items if you somehow suck and you SHOULD be doing this as often as possible; its also really fun just seeing what compositions other people came up with).

Anyways, I already loved 13 Sentinels but this game really made me a Vanillaware fan, going to have to try out their previous games at some point.
