It's def hard to assign songs to a specific genre, If we're talking about artists I'd say Future is primarily a Hip-hop artist that incorporates RnB and some pop elements

Drake does Pop that incorporates Hip-hop and other genres

It depends which Drake and Future you're talking about, how can you incorporate whatever "pop" entails? That "pop" stuff you're suggesting IS hip hop and r&b. The division is faulty to begin with, Drake is very similar to acts like Kanye who use very melodic beats and vocals. It'd be calling poppy trap music like Lil Durk, Lil Baby or Gunna pop before hip hop... that's why people call that stuff pop rap or pop trap, anyway.

As for Future, he's a little different because of his subject matter and general mood. Like, I wouldn't really call HNDRXX or either self-titled "pop" music, but High off Life, I probably would.

Also, it would be like calling House of Balloons "pop" music, otherwise it would just be an erroneous label. Sure, it's melodic, but it's got an underground context (no influence from the industry, shared on blogs) and the beats are underground as well

It's similar to how people create divisions in country music, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Morgan Wallen are more "country pop" while Ryan Adams is more normal, contemporary country

Was wrong but still not a pop song. Sounds like a Summer Walker tune

it kinda does sound pop im ngl

that piano + the rhythm sounds like most modern pop prod nowadays, i feel like if that song showed up on a Rihanna album you’d agree

saying this as someone that doesn’t like Future

Pack this guy back to 2016. It's not even funny, it's stupid and unenjoyable. If I wanted to laugh I'd listen to Weird Al, because at least there's some creativity there. This is just "haha talking about my p****, isn't that funny" and at the same time "guys, I'm actually a serious rapper too! Like I can spit bars!". It's a one trick pony that was dead years ago. Like, dude... Read the room. We don't want this.

I didn’t call him a pop act at all. My argument is that if Drake can be classified as one, then so can Future, because they are extremely similar artists.

Your response was “Drake made HOWGH”, to which I said that Future made Selfish and also has collaborated with way more high profile pop acts than Drake ever has

It depends how you define pop. To me, since it lacks the industry influence and the beats/instrumentals aren't palatable. Those are two things that tie anything considered pop together, whether it's Beach Boys or Kanye West

Not to mention songs like Loft Music are literal verse-less, structureless songs

Echoes and Silence and Thursday are even less pop, I will say though

Ya overall Hndrxx isn't pop but that and PIE are. I just don't think a song that wasn't submitted to the radio like My Collection with its entrancing beat and subject matter is traditionally "pop"

i never said david bowie sucked, all i did was call him some cracker

I read something nasty about him the other day. Imagine fending for that weirdo

PLAYBOY: How much of that are we supposed to believe? Your former publicist, the celebrated ex-groupie Cherry Vanilla, says she’s slept with you and that you’re not gay at all. She says you just let people think you like guys.

BOWIE: Oh, I’d love to meet this impostor she’s talking about. It sure ain’t me. That’s actually a lovely quote. Cherry’s almost as good as I am at using the media.

PLAYBOY: Yet the fact remains that you’ve never been seen with a male lover. Why?

BOWIE: Oh, Lord, I got over being a queen quite a long time ago.
For a while, it was pretty much 50-50; and now the only time it tempts me is when I go over to Japan. There are such beautiful-looking little boys over there. Little boys? Not that little. About 18 or 19. They have a wonderful sort of mentality. They’re all queens until they reach 25, then suddenly they become samurai, get married and have thousands of children. I love it

Yeah, at the end of the day I think it’s all pretty subjective. Like what defines a palatable beat? Is a song like Wicked Games any less of an R&B song if you replaced all of the indie/underground sounds and replaced them with electronic drums and bright synths? Or is the way he’s singing over the instrumental what make it R&B in the first place?

I really don’t know lol I feel like arguing that industry influence is what makes pop ‘pop’ seems dismissive of indie acts with little backing making pop music; but at the same time I think arguing that any song that follow a verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure is “pop” music seems pretty dismissive of the thousands of R&B artists that have made songs with this kind of structure while also having a defining sound that makes it “R&B”.

    Idk man
