Lyrically, I can think of many albums that are better. Why? Because they actually say something of substance which speaks to me and to which I can relate. And if you want metaphors, word play and so on, I can think of many, many better albums and songs. And for rhyme schemes, I can also find many better songs and albums. Someone rapping about holding an M16 and doing basic aaaaaaaaa bbbbbbbb monosyllabic rhyming is nothing special. Sure there are some good beats there, but overall it is quite dusty compared to modern music and even earlier music.
It's just the tales of a young man who tries to survive and make it in life. Every human has a survival instinct.
Bc it was the first of its time to spit bars in a battle rap type sense and it do be making me feel like i'm on some dirty subway in New York with rats running under my feet
broooo, nostalgia has little to do with it, Illmatic sounds as fresh as ever
how can you listen to tracks like Represent and The World Is Yours and not be thinking that his flows, rhyming, beats, lyrics, atmosphere, etc. s***s on 95 % of current-age hip-hop?
We arent saying it's total trash. The point is that people who didnt grow up with it or read forums/reviews would in no way claim it to be the best rap album, nor say it is musically or lyrically special in any way. If 90% of reviewers and "hiphop heads" said Blueprint 1 was the best album ever, people would have that on their lists because they follow like sheep, but also because it's good. So they say, hey this sounds nice AND it's everyone's favorite, so it's my favorite. BTW, there is no such thing as "greatest album". Your favorite album is the best album (in your opinion). If we want to talk about "greatest" in an objetive manner, we'd have to go with sales or something like that.

OK and how many have since spit bars in a battle rap way? And how many have done it lyrically better and with way better production? How many have rapped actual meaningful songs? You can even point to later Nas songs for that.

Shut up Andre
Ehh lol. Nas is the best rapper ever to me. He offers the perfect mix of technique, intellect, griminess and swag, which makes him very appealing and accessible.
There is no other rapper who is capable of writing rhymes that describe reality as vividly and masterfully as Nas imo. Dude does it so naturally, plus he's authentic af. At last, his flow is so raw and acrobatic that it makes heads spin, he goes Super Saiyan on every track, you can tell that he learned from his father who is a Jazz musician.
Prod wise we get Preemo, Q-Tip, Pete Rock and Large Pro all in their prime. Every beat on the album is out of this world.
I don't see how "lyrics and beats got better" at all
Who can do better in your opinion?
Wow. This is so f***ing perfect. We stan
No u, sheep. "HipHop heads" be evading questions.
It's easy to say that AFTER the fact lmao. Go start a new wave and you'll see how much innovation takes place afterwords.

Innovation doesnt make something sound good or have substance. Also, stop being rude.

You have such a one-dimensional idea of lyricism, man. Nas' lyricism on Illmatic is amongst the greatest achievements of the genre and you are trying to compare lyrics from a free-flowing street-mind to concept songs. Lyrics on Illmatic are extremely vivid, authentic and memorable and they perfectly match the atmosphere of the beats. His delivery is so ridiculously good, every verse is so incredibly smooth, I used to know the entirety of Illmatics lyrics by heart. I could rap every song.

I dont. Either be smart, say something uplifting or make it poetically complex... And dont do it over dusty beats. Or be relatable, interesting and/or entertaining to me as a person in general. You have a very one-dimensional view of both lyricism and what is good in music. Music is not like morals or attractiveness. It is subjective.

When you put it like that I guess I get what you’re saying. Nas and Wu Tang do have a pretty good balance of technicality of vividness in their lyrics. I was talking about like MF DOOM, Em, Earl. But you’re right that they’re not the same thing, it’s more technical than story driven nowadays.

Yo shut yo suburban ass up this is the nastiest f***ing take I've read on KTT2 so far my God. How the f*** is N.Y. State of Mind or One Love lacking in substance? Speaking to your incarnated folks, uplifting your peoples, being observant of the corruption that is eating up your communities how is that anything other than not real or effective. Just cause the niggas you stan cry on tracks and being on the nose than a motherfucker dosen't make em any more profound for that. That says more about you than Nas, either you're far removed from that type of environment making you so ignorant to the lingo that you just think of his rhyming only as "M16s", "rhyming for rhyming sake" and nothing more or s*** just completely flew tf over your head lmfao.
Outta all 90s rappers you call out the nigga that's been labeled a "conscious cat" all throughout his career for being what, substanceless? Yea aight, go ahead

2. "Outta all 90s rappers you call out the nigga that's been labeled a "conscious cat" all throughout his career" - irrelevant to this thread. This thread is not about that at all.
3. Did you learn grammar from your favorite hiphop album?

Nigga you said he was substanceless, are you dense or something? Don't do that, just cause you don't "relate" to a rapper dosen't make it any less smh

shut the f*** up
you have no actual criticisms you just say you know better albums and songs. and your strongest point against the production that its "quite dusty compared to modern music"
why do you need to "relate" to a rapper? who are these rappers that are just so relatable that make Nas look like s***?
excellent production in the classic NY boom bap style
yep, and somehow doesnt sound dusty at all
like you can tell its from a past era, just not dusty like a lot of wu tang music fell into
