I don't know exactly what I miss, but i hate how 'soft' fashion is now, no one actually dresses well they just piece together things that signal certain broad aesthetic terms. And since they're communicating purely through these basic ass shapes and symbols everyone can understand it, it really is some lowest common denominator s***.

I miss the niche that streetwear sneakers etc used to exist in.

It used to signal that you cared about culture and something deeper

the term you are looking for has been coined as tasteslop

nobody cares about the ethos of a brand or the craftsmanship or just about anything that goes into making great product, its expression, or even the art of things anymore

when fast fashion moved overseas and were able to move from sample to retail in days in the 90s/2000s it set a very dangerous precedent of what was to come in the form of shein, fashionnova, other cheap discount retailers

couple that with algorithms feeding people product on a platter and controlling whats in nowadays more than just having a group of actual tastemakers who shifted the paradigm and you can see where it fell apart

we hardly have any standout fashion icons these days and will never have someone moving the needle like ye from 2004-2021, virgil love him or hate him, pharrell etc

the end result of “creative director” entering the lexicon

  • the fabrics. even luxury brands are making polyester bullshit these days. I miss when you could buy wool and leather at zara. acrylic knits and “vegan” leather are scams
