arent there releases by A list artists that arent gold or platinum? or do you mean, if an artist achieves gold or platinum on one song then they’re no longer underground

Sometimes bigger artists commercially decline, or at least have certain releases that commercially decline, such that they are ostensibly underground music

  • that raw shyt naw mean? Bumpin YL Starker and zoomo album RRR rn. thats that underground crack

Officially acknowledged as being part of a scene but just smaller than bubbling under mainstream

artists having less immediate and large-scale exposure in favor of ownership of the means of releasing one's music and a significant degree of control over the entire process of music creation is historically associated with those acts that we might deem 'underground'

while the term might encompass certain sounds associated with it, appeals to certain audiences, and certain sales figures, those three factors do not define an 'underground' movement or artist

ultimately the less 'money' is involved in the process of creating music the more there are chances to call someone an 'underground musician'

Underground rap was independent alternative rap in the 00s on labels like Stones Throw, Rhymesayers, Baby Grande, Def Jux, and others. They harkened back to boom bap or just skirted modern pop/trap sensibility with spoken word or even post rock tendencies.

I wasn't around in the 90s so idk what it was then. The wave of poptimism in the 2010s kind of killed all of that. SoundCloud took its place. Now people just use it to refer to less popular things or even popular/major label things that are nostalgic such as Griselda. It just became a fashionable signifier.

Not to mention artists like Chance and Macklemore and Russ redefining independent artist. You can be independent with major label distribution. It's all kind of meaningless. Billy Woods is on Backwoodz that is distributed by Fat Possum that is distributed by RED that is owned by Sony.

Unsigned, or signed to an independent label. An artist or artistic movement fhat (perhaps deliberately) eschews mass appeal. May be considered “niche” or “avant garde”. Not simply underexposed or unpopular

i think emphasizing being underexposed/unpopular doesnt mean youre underground is huge
