if depression is tied to culture (a ridiculous statement in all honesty) then so is reporting depression, and something tells me these poorer countries may not have the resources to spend money/time on mental health services.
It’s not ridiculous at all, these countries tend to be very religious and shun people with mental disorders. I’m not saying mental illness isn’t common there, I’m saying specifically the feelings of depression and hopelessness aren’t. And if it wasn’t tied to culture, how do you explain the fact that people weren’t vocally depressed in the 1800s or Middle Ages, despite life being objectively worse. Of course the economy drives culture especially during high times but there are a lot of social factors drawn in that aren’t resolved by planned economies
Aside from ukraine and Serbia (in which standards have fallen due to physical conflict moreso than economic changes) the countries you’ve listed ESPECIALLY Poland are better off now. Then there are Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, China, and Vietnam yeah I’d say that accepting the free market wasn’t the biggest cause of the hardships facing Romania right now
China and Vietnam dont have free markets
They are only free until they stop serving the party in charge and bring more headache then they are revenue, which renders them not free.
Wise system.
nice lie

how do you know this? show me some measurements, some tangible data
Yes Poland is the only country which saw drastic economic changes but it's more due to its geography and INSANELY close tie with Germany(both geographically and economically) which essentially makes them a German vassal state.

Yes they do, not as free as America or whatever, but they’re certainly not socialist. Their rise in living standards is closely tied to them opening up their markets, as opposed to more strict command economy they had earlier. If China’s system proves to work better than America’s, I’m not entirely against it becoming the norm economically (aside from the censorship and stuff)

But it already works better...
In fact pre-Regan America resembled the modern Chinese system a lot closer then you think.
Ukraine became the poorest country on the continent after in 2014 replacing Romania (also an eastern block country).
Also soviet Ukraine had a higher industrial output then West Germany.
iirc the poorest country in Europe has been Moldova for a decade +
Go start a country nerds.
we are gonna have one of those countries with a dotted line around it on a map

I’m not a neoliberal I don’t support the extreme free market measures taken domestically, I moreso mean in terms of international trade and investing

When it comes to places like Africa being leased depressed that’s mostly anecdotal so there’s not much I can give you in that regard, but when it comes to America being less depressed in the past there’s this
Way to oversimplify it instead of recognizing that these states have struggled to transition into the global economy because the old, corrupt power structures from the socialist era are still in place. They are socialist governments without the social services, kleptocracies.

Please expound
dont wanna sound too corny or overly academic but its a scale
totalitarian => authoritarian => democratic
a regime can slide more towards totalitarian, but to be totalitarian, theyd have to exhibit complete control over the social/political/economic life over their citizens. there is no country that does that. they may just be slightly more totalitarian on the scale

What about Mussolini’s regime? He was the one who coined the term “totalitarian state” after all, even had Gentile write all sorts of philosophical works explaining the supposed political philosophy of “Totalitarianism”

I'm not an historical expert, but his italy and hitlers germany were certainly the closest things we've had to totalitarianism atleast in the last 150 years.
but even then i'd say they were just very authoritarian fascist, not that there's much significant difference. but to me, a totalitarian regime is one that would control your social interactions entirely, in addition to economic and political life. i don't think tht's ever been a thing
Living standards have objectively risen in many post communist countries
