People are trying to guess if Raggaeton or Afrobeats will be the new wave on a global wave.

  • I actually think the beats are what limits those genres in the mainstream. Reggae has always had the same problem with maintaining its mainstream presence, listeners get over it. I don’t think reggaeton will go anywhere but I’m skeptical it’ll be global outside of the transcending 2-3 artists. I don’t doubt some Afropop artist will be global (maybe Tems or Fireboy) but I’m pretty confident their sound will be significantly distanced from Afro sounds over time too.

Those sounds don’t reflect the rhythm and pace of African American life and sound. Of course they can play with it every now n then but it won’t be a wave like say how UK grime made its way into America mainstream

I think if anything it's more likely to be trap beats that sample Reggaeton elements.

Good take, if afropop is popular in America it won’t have a notably black American audience. Almost like that first American reggae wave which mostly co opted white rock listeners.

I want Raps popularity to slow down so Afro Music can take the spot. It hasn't been that Long that Rap has taken the top spot but i believe a renaissance of the afro conscious era is needed. The Trap, gangster "no cap, we actually killing people" era has to end.
A Afrocentric unity era is needed but where is the demographic for that ? US culture dictates too much in the world to even think to change their way. It seems they double down on their flaws and its sad for the evolution of the mainstream.
It's time for a new era

I’m afraid African American culture is too far gone for that kind of renaissance. For one, we in America don’t live in highly congested areas where our day to day is intertwined with our foods and music and overall lifestyle. There’s a lot of space in America even in New York. So it kinda creates an air of sovereignty therefore our music is much more about the ego and personality.

Most of the world (especially the black/brown world) is very congested and in touch with their cultural history. The languages allow for much more fluidity allowing the listener to feel connected to that community and not so much who the artist is.

I’m in northeast Africa atm, I was a club the other night and they were playing local/traditional music mixed with alot of Afro pop and reggaeton and it was all in the same bpm and sound range. When American music is played the bpm drops tremendously and there is a focus on the slogans and sayings that we’re so good at in America.

English has a lot of rhythmic limitations
And I think this is why our music is a bit slower than the rest of the world.

Idk I need to build on this thought because I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately as I’ve been traveling and listening to sound

Also most black Americans have completely lost and even disregard their ancestry. So that Afro/Consciousness I personally don’t think will ever come back. America has completely washed the negros mind and this is why our culture is deteriorating
