  • I hear so many people wishing for originality but I wonder do people even understand what originality/uniqueness is. Even if a musician comes who is unique naturally they'll say he or she is trying too hard when that person is actually just naturally different without even trying.

I'ts hard to explain. But that feeling when I first heard Day N Nite or when I first heard Through The Wire. Never heard anything like those records before. It's very rare an artist comes with a completely new sound and story.

A lot of these rappers today don't have interesting stories that translate into the record.

No idea's original, there's nothing new under the sun
It's never what you do, but how it's done

It’s an ineffable quality making it an impossible question not to mention cynical. Plenty of very unique artists doing their thing that seem completely natural to me

I remember hearing Day n Nite on the radio back in 2008 during the "new @2 mix"'on Power 106. During that time we were expecting new songs from TI, Lil Wayne, The Game.. but when they played Day N Nite I was like wtf is this s***!!

I haven't had that feeling in yeeeears.

When Keem dropped Orange Soda it kinda had that same feeling but not exactly

“You’re unique just like everyone else.”

  • Someone who. Is willing to stay true to themselves and is willing to take risks and doesn't compromise or cater towards a certain parameter
Someone who doesnt think in a certain box and is willing to create their own rules in Every way possible

Because tbh the closer u get to the mainstream, the more rules/standards are being followed
Whether that be mixing wise, structure, sound, melodies etc

“You’re unique just like everyone else.”

    Everyone is
But people chose to follow the rules rather
    Look for familiarity

There’s no such thing as true originality. Everything we create is inspired by life experiences and media we consume. However, you can channel all of this in a way that hasn’t really been tapped by anybody else.

Since everybody comes from different backgrounds, we all have our own original style that nobody else really has, but a lot of us never find it because we’re caught up in our influences instead of making some new s***. Once you tap into that style and stop worrying about chasing trends or trying to sound like somebody else then you unlock your own style. This is originality

Originality in music comes from not giving a f*** and just being on your own s***.

It's how weird you can make your voice over the trendiest beat while writing bars nobody cares about
