“Woman rap album” would sound awkward

In my actual post in OP I worded it as “rap albums made by women” which is obviously better but not really good for a thread title. I just assume people know what I’m talking about, and today “female rap” is definitely a thing and a lane in itself. Some people call it p**** rap should I do that lol

People are just looking for issues that arn't there. "Female Rap" is a different sound than male rap. It is what it is.

  • idc if it's a RYMcore pick Sometimes I Might Be Introvert might be the one

Miseducation if we consider it a rap album.

If not then I think Missy probably takes this. That said I don’t personally have a strong opinion on which of her albums is her strongest. But she’s got some goodies

Missy albums lowkey ain’t full rap either

I love Lauryn and Missy but I kind of wanted to exclude them by capitalizing RAP

I think their work gets too much focus. Like you would think someone like MC Lyte who actually raps for 3 verses a song for 7 albums doesn’t exist. Or someone like Remy Ma who imo is sicker as a straight New York grimy MC than a lot of men in that lane that get held up high.

Why do we only elevate the songstress “special creative” ones or otherwise focus on the polar opposite hypersexual side? MC Lyte got one of the best solo rap albums of 1988 any gender keep the singing s*** tbh I love the artists but am so done with them dominating this convo

Why do we only elevate the songstress “special creative” ones

Because they have great songwriting, hooks and production, which is paramount for music listeners. It's cool if you can write great verses, but there's a lot more to that in making great songs, let alone classic albums.

You could have asked for the best rap verses from women and highlighted some of your favorites, but if we're talking about albums, there's so much more that people can attach themselves to.

  • Post like this is why hip hop rap will neve mature

Yeah I feel like it’s criminally underrated

We know that fans in that era were very fickle. Seems like the single didn’t connect how it was supposed to but s*** is fire

  • It’s still Lauryn Hill and it will probably never be topped

"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" but it's more fusion than anything.

    Prob "Super Duper Fly"

    Miseducation? A rap album?

I have a real problem with that being the first album people point to

If Take Care is a rap album then so is The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill

Fair point but a rap album needs an emphasis on rap lol. I consider Missy and Lauryns music to be hybrid efforts.

Lauryn and Missy don’t have albums where they really carry an album as an MC

If what you’re saying is true then why is Rakim rated higher than PM Dawn? They had them hooks. Why are Nas albums still ranked over Drake by many people, despite drake certainly having a lot of “songwriting” advantages? Because that s*** can only get you so far in a RAP conversation, not to say the music doesn’t matter, of course it does

It just makes me feel like there might be an element of people not taking female rappers seriously just as MCs so they need that extra singing and “artistry” to be respected

Many people still consider 1988 to be one of hip hop’s greatest years. MC Lyte made a classic album that stands right there next to Kane and Slick Rick

We still hold the men from that era high. Skipping over Lyte for Lauryn and Missy is not much different from placing Ja Rule albums over G Rap because “the music is more enjoyable”
