Alright OP I understand the whole Creepy vibe that the lyrics pretty obviously give off despite the absolute beauty of the song sonically.

But I actually think the song is really about the dynamic between a guy and a girl. The whole age gap thing is part of the story to be edgy (wouldn't be new for the 1975) but more importantly exclaim and highlight how a much older guy is getting scolded by this underage girl on how he lives his life. He "sits and gets stoned with 30 year old's thinking that he's made it" Meanwhile the girl is focused on much more important things like "looking for salvation in the secular age". Yet she finds herself here looking for this salvation in this much older man who by saying "I'm not your savior" points out the irony in the situation: there is a certain immaturity in "looking for salvation". In my opinion and interpretation this song is all about getting older and growing jaded and kind of becoming so disillusioned and careless that you find yourself here dating a 17 year old LMAO

Meanwhile he finds himself saying they're just girls maybe reminiscing to when he was 17 himself and dating girls his same age, he is older but nothing has changed, the girls are just girls breaking hearts. This leads us to the chorus and central concept here, girls will be this illusive thing to the male mind no matter how messed up the context.

TLDR: I think the song is mostly about maturity and the whole girls are from mars boys are from venus thing, although it is also obviously held together by some big age gap predator vibes. Love this song like a lot of 1975 s*** bro just be freestyling in the booth
