    Real.

I genuinely did not f*** with the recent, 'palace but not for kids' line - it felt like a dig towards Jackson's charity work at Neverland/a nod towards the accusations.

But then he followed it up with what was in a sense an MJ tribute with Slide.

    Strange.

    VIBE Cover Story 2014:

“This album is probably the most aware of self that I’ve ever been,” Drake says. He’s rocking a virtually airbrushed shape-up, dark blue button-up shirt and creamy gray Timbs, preparing to deconstruct his best project to date. As he leans against a white throw pillow embroidered with OVO’s owl logo, Drake appears comfortable with his current pole position. “I’m here, I’m gonna own this now. I’m gonna give you guys everything and keep going forward ’til something else happens. Like, I’ve fallen in love. Or make the real Here, My Dear...”

VIBE: Like Nothing Was The Same, Nas’ last album, Life Is Good, was greatly influenced by Marvin Gaye’s 1978 LP Here, My Dear.

Drake: Oh wow, crazy. I didn’t even know that. Here, My Dear was an influence to me because he was telling such a vivid story about going through divorce and that particular relationship. Even though this album wasn’t really about a relationship or that specific, I had vivid details much like that album and wanted to get them across in that concise format. Here, My Dear wasn’t Marvin Gaye’s biggest album. But I think when people look back in 10 years they’ll be like, “Damn, ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ was on this. ‘Started From the Bottom’ was on this.” I always think about that feeling, flipping over the CD like, What was on this album?

    GQ Cover Story 2013

In one song off the new album, Drake delves into the pain of his parents' split, but as always for Drake, it's raw material—powerful, personal, and cautionary—reshaped as art. And it's what makes Drake Drake: his willingness to go there and say it out loud, and in that way possess it. If it's an impulse not wholly recognizable in rap, it suggests that perhaps Drake belongs on a slightly different continuum, one belonging, at least in spirit, to confessional poets or expressionist painters or indie bands like the xx, a band he loves. But, he says, his lodestar for the new work has been Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear, the 1978 double-album confessional chronicling the collapse of Gaye's first marriage, described by one critic as "the sound of divorce...exposed in all its tender-nerve glory."

"It's so honest," says Drake, who's also been recording in Gaye's old studio, Marvin's Room. "He just puts it all out there.

Who are some of the artists that have influenced you?

M.I.A. has been a big influence. I love her music. I love how she expresses herself. I love Willow Smith. I think she’s awesome. I’d love to do something with her one day. I love Kanye. Drake has always been a big inspiration musically. So many people inspire me.

You mentioned Drake. How did your cameo in his “Worst Behavior” video come about?

Drake hit me through Twitter and told me how much he liked “Prayer” and how much it inspired him. It's crazy because I grew up watching Degrassi. He’s always been in front of me. He asked me to come and be a part of his video. That’s how that happened.
