I can’t say because I’m not very educated on the topic. I’d assume different tribes had different interpretations of what they knew to be God. But overall I don’t believe they viewed God the way most Westerners do now.

When I believed in Christianity, I was always under the impression that you accepted Jesus, became saved, and went to Heaven or didn’t and went to hell. There were no other alternatives. That’s how it was always presented to me growing up.
When you begin asking more questions about the religion (similar to the one OP asked), it becomes more confusing and contradictory.
