I usually have four or five films I'll give a perfect score to in a given year and this year I only have one so far. It's been a lot of disappointments for me. In any other year, half my list would absolutely not be in contention.

I think 2022 had some of my fav films but 2023 had the largest bench overall.

Asteroid City felt like a good distillation of the times, and it was memorable on that basis.

Phoenician Scheme felt like it was working with character archetypes that Wes could do in his sleep at this point.

I managed to be in the mood to catch all 3 of his last films in a theater. Usually i either dont have time to go or cant be bothered. But his last 3 just so happened to catch me at the perfect times where i was like "man im feeling like going to the theater"

Loved all 3. Moreso than most of his others tbh

  • been a very week year honestly but here my top 10:

    1. OBAA
    2. sinners
    3. marty supreme (probably)
    4. bugonia
    5. eddington
    6. Mickey 17
    7. if i had legs id kick you
    8. together
    9. highest 2 lowest
    10. die my love

(still gotta watch sentimental value, frankenstein, and hamnet)

Agreed but it's not something I've felt the need to argue about. 90% of the fall releases didn't live up to expectations
