Depends what you mean by self-expression. Personally, connection is more important than the more superficial forms of self-expression but when it comes to more important stuff (maybe we can call it self-actualization?), connection which prevents you from fulfilling that is not worth it.

But then, connection can transcend the “self” and redefine it. So maybe my initial take is wrong

The self is constantly being redefined through life experience and for most humans, connection or lack thereof is an essential part of the experience. We understand ourselves through our connections to the external world and the internal reaction to them.

yeah but not really
6 year relationship ending so it’s pretty tough, but we’re also being really healthy and supportive about it which is nice
