just started learning about ancient history but within the iron age the Greek City States, Indians the Chinese are much more interesting imo and all three had much more interesting intellectual history compared to the Romans which is what does it for me

Early Korean history is also really fascinating due to their being at the crossroads of and interacting with and being influenced by and influencing China, Japan, and the Steppes, and how much is shrouded by the mists of time

reading a book on an intro to world history from prehistory to modern so it’s mainly just an introduction to these empires so i don’t know much details but the greek city states pre alexander are much more interesting like the battle between sparta and athens and what they represent (even if with athens being a democracy of landlords) and how west ended up simultaneously representing both even if they refuse to see Sparta as a predecessor.

The sort of parallels between past and present (Chinese class dynamics, Sparta vs Athens ideals, etc) are interesting because I think, while there is some truth to them, a large part is due to our reading of the past through to the lens of our historiography - eg divided Europe vs United China (often in the question of why China did not expand overseas in the same way) I have a theory that you could read European history through a Chinese-style dynastic model, it would be a bit of a stretch but it’s not impossible, while China itself is definitely far more fractured than given credit - but actuall I do think the Chinese bureaucratic state is something that is quite constant

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on caste, I am skeptical on Brahminism as the root cause because caste seems quite pervasive in that it is preserved among Indian Muslims and Christians and Sikhs, all of whom theoretically should be casteless, and my pet theory on Rroma people is that they essentially preserve (or preserved for a very long time) caste, now obviously they were forced to the bottom of the social pyramid anyways, but the way in which they adapted to this seems like “caste” to me
