Light creates heat. Freezer needs to stay consistent with temps, so no light source/bulb to overheat etc.

It turns off. At least my old fridge did that. There was a little button that the fridge door would touch and it would turn off the light as the door reached its closing

You could touch the button too and I would see the light turn off
