I mean, it's good music but why are we giving Jay Z credit for finally making grown, self-reflective content at 40-something years old when his peers have been doing similar s***?
Nas been talking real world s***.
Eminem had an entire album about addiction and finding his place in tne world in 2010.
Why is Jay Z suddenly recognizing that life isn't all about entry level "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", "I used to move weight" such a big deal?
it's a good album but it spawned a genre of corny white rap fan post where they think every rapper over the age of 40 needs to be rapping about paying their taxes.
Jay-Z has always made introspective, grown music since the beginning of his career lmfao. nigga literally has a song with Beanie about daddy issues as the outro to a group album, what are we doing on a Friday morning? lol
Story of OJ a classic song but some of the lyrics about property management in Dumbo etc are hilarious, feel like if it came out now more people would make fun of them
This guy said Jay Z finally made self reflective content
Name a self-reflective Jay Z album.
I feel like if album came out now there’d be more online criticism of the Financial Literacy / “what’s better than one billionaire?” lyrics which felt like a product of their time

You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?
We exist in the context of everything around us, and everything before us
(Idk why I said that, ion even like Jay Z, but it seemed fitting as to why people may have enjoyed it)
But yeah KILL JAY Z and Marcy Me excellent songs, really love Story of OJ/Family Feud/title track/Bam too

What does this even mean?
What do you know about Jay Z as an individual that doesn't paint him in a good light?
That he told you through his music.

My daddy left us and now im rich as f*** isn't introspection, it's the same braggy, self-aggrandizing s*** he's said throughout most of his career.
Good album but overrated. Lot of wack bars and all the financial stuff is really lame pseudointellectual bullshit

“Financial freedom my only hope
F*** livin' rich and dyin' broke
I bought some artwork for one million
Two years later, that s*** worth two million
Few years later, that s*** worth eight million
I can't wait to give this s*** to my children”
Yeah if this came out today people would be like “is bro trying to sell me a course” 💀
Name a self-reflective Jay Z album.
If the criteria as simple as "self-reflective" then...all of them?
it's a good album but it spawned a genre of corny white rap fan post where they think every rapper over the age of 40 needs to be rapping about paying their taxes.
I "took the bait" didn't I? 30 years of probing the life and times of S. Carter and not one of those albums been "self-reflective"?
If the criteria as simple as "self-reflective" then...all of them?
I think you underestimate what self-reflection is.
It's facing and expressing uncomfortable truths about yourself.
Jay Z is an excellent poet, but his appeal is that he paints more vivid pictures than the average dope boy turned millionaire.
I'll ask this again, what has Jay Z revealed to you about himself that doesn't paint him a good/sympathetic light?
