I don't know much about bowie or prince, however i would say it's kanye's equivalent of a white album-esque project where he had all these half cooked ideas that aren't really cohesive from a sonic perspective and some how put them all on one project and it made a lot more sense than it did on paper, and in time became more acclaimed and celebrated.
