Confessions is a little different bc the whole point is Usher (or JD) being in deep regret about his toxicity and dealing with the consequences of it which f***s his whole world up. it’s basically a morality tale

these new niggas are toxic with no shame and don’t have the vocals to make you overlook it

Yes I've heard the album too but no the new guys have shame too and it doesn't make it any better, if anything it just makes them sound more pathetic and embarrassing

there's a big big difference between admitting toxicity and critiquing yourself/the culture vs. turning it into a borderline sociopathic trend and encouraging it.

insecure manlets who don't know how to be in touch with their emotions or actually manoeuvre relationships are revelling in it because it appeases their underdevelopment.

it's getting called out rn bcuz who the f*** wants normalised emotional instability straight after a pandemic that disconnected everyone from each other.

Yep, men struggle with emotional intelligence and doesn’t do the necessary work like going to therapy. This is how men (black men especially) going into their 30s and 40s still running the streets and glorifying toxic behavior like they still in their 20s.

    Apology Men Music

Music has always been toxic. Humans have toxic tendencies by default.

JD was half right in one thing, a good portion of the blues is hella toxic. It’s the f***ing blues my nigga

Some of the funkiest soul music was niggas singing from the perspective of a toxic pimp (shoutout to my nigga Curtis RIP)

The problem is niggas don’t play instruments anymore. (Shoutout to music programs in school getting the raw deal)

The problem is niggas don’t really sing anymore (refer to above)

The problem is niggas don’t really produce anymore (shoutout to splice)

The problem is niggas pen game aint like it used to be anymore (shoutout to illiteracy, no cap I’m worried about the next generation of artists. “They don’t even read anymore.”)

Turns out when you take away the little things that made you wanna sing a Bobby Womack song or even an Usher or a Shaggy song about infidelity and put it on a family cookout playlist, turns out most ppl are not gonna be fond of that s*** no more.

Thread needs to end HERE. Bingo.

None of these niggas making GOOD MUSIC OR WRITING WELL. It’s all corny and mediocre social media justin laboy tier ass songs

  • Jul 26, 2022

Like I don’t thick toxic RnB is really the issue. It’s just these niggas got boring delivery. Boring songs. Songwriting look like a social media dork who sucks at relationships wrote it. Like man if you wanna be a a****** Atleast make it sound great and innovative. All this time bullshit ass RnB Niggas on trap beats doing this mediocre singing bragging bout doing b****es dirty is wack

the problem now is that we have random dudes screaming BIIIIITCH over some distorted-generic-ass-trap beats

  • Jul 26, 2022

The problem is current toxic music like that new DVSN plays too much into it by specifically saying it.

It should go unsaid and be conveyed more in the actual message and tone of the song not literally put in the song.

Artist are losing the art of getting their message across with slapping you on the face with it. What happened to subtlety and poetic ability like using metaphors. Artist are poetically and journalistically lazy these days.

The problem is that the male and female artists who make it these days are boring as f***, can't sing for s***, and most of them sound the same. The songwriting is lazy leading to very repetitive and soul-less storytelling. The production is just "it's vibes" type bullshit which again is boring as hell. And the artists making the s*** have about as much personality and depth as a crusty c***sock in a puddle after a sunshower.

Toxic R&B back in the day had the benefit of the artists actually being able to sing and show genuine emotion through their singing and songwriting. Along with the use of live instrumentation to further drive home a particular feeling that the artists were going for. The stories they'd tell in the songs of their toxic escapades were interesting. Showing them succumbing to their selfish desires, but also expressing genuine regret and emptiness during or after whatever it is they did. But even if that regret and/or emptiness is missing you still get a ton of emotion throughout the songs because these artists could actually f***in sing. You hardly get any of that from these new R&B artists making it. They're so caught up tryna be "savage" and "demons" that they completely lack the soul required to make that kinda music good.

R&B has always had elements of toxicity in it. The toxic s*** isn't even the issue. It's the fact that many R&B artists today making that kinda music just f***in suck. The soul has been missing.

    s*** gettin old nigga

  • Jul 26, 2022

it’s played because it’s not genuine

originally I think it was - Drake will occasionally say some crazy s***, Weekend’s whole bag was originally acting like a h**** borderline sociopath, but I think songs like The Weekend by sza and people like Brent quietly bubbling in the background was what solidified it as an aesthetic- just being a douchebag character singing about love.

There’s something compelling to that, but with any aesthetic that blows up, niggas will always try to copy swag, which is why we got people like dvsn, who normally makes beautiful soulful s*** about falling in love and being in relationships, making a song sounding like he a emotionally disaffected nigga in his early 20s cheating on women. Other artists have done this and it feels like a betrayal of their previous s*** to embrace a persona that’s hot rn - plus it’s corny asf. Notice that the modern archetype for this Toxic Nigga R&B, Weeknd, even realized it gets stale and u can’t do it forever, and his career has been the better for that evolution

  • Jul 26, 2022

Toxicity is the product and not the music itself

  • Cherrywine

    All this
Also, a lot of the best singers grew up training their Vocals in a church choir. Lotta new guys didn’t grow up even going to church to build that foundation

I dont even think its just the absence of church, some great singers didnt grow up in it.

But what has been happening in the last decades is slowly s*** being defunded.

Maybe if church had figured out a way to adapt and not isolate hella kids during the 90s/2000s there wouldn’t be such a void lol

  • Jul 26, 2022

    songwriting and memorable hooks/melodies

and the other half of it is twitter takes being used in these toxic r&b records lol

  • Jul 26, 2022

It just becomes very corny when that’s all there is to an artist, especially if they acknowledge it. Like you’re a grown ass man taking pride in being immature?

Some artists just go with the flow and comes off much more natural.

  • Jul 26, 2022

Idk just too much of it

We get it, u f*** countless women on tour yet u have a family at home, your heart is cold, you are emotionally unavailable and cool as f***

  • Jul 26, 2022

Ill always appreciate the honesty though

But it’s the same problem with mainstream rap and everything else, just want more variety

S*** don't really be authentic tbh. Seems like they're forcing it without all the neccessary nuance to portray some toxic persona.

Like in Marvin's room or trilogy or when future pre high off life did it, they weren't "TRYING" to be toxic they just expressed themselves and it came off as being toxic.

It's the same in how people don't like non street niggas rapping bout street activities
