The musical highs are better than the two albums that came before it but it has no identity. Just a collection of songs with nothing to tie it together. It also feels deeply impersonal despite attempts to the contrary because it was made by like 4 different versions of Kanye. Ye and JIK at least work as time capsules and snapshots into who he was at the time he was making those albums.
His biggest problem since Pablo
Bloated with some unnecessary songs but it was thematically and musically beautiful for the most part. Decent album.
It took the religious and mental depth of JIK and Ye but made it more palatable to a modern hip hop audience without being too trendy like Vultures.
It's on a similar level of quality to TLOP for me personally. And that was even a general consensus until it became more trendy to discredit everything Ye does on this forum.
Prime Ye would have made an entire album with the sound Jail and Back To Life had and wouldn’t be trying to trend chase drill and generic trap without adding new elements to it
Yandhi was his last album like that. It’s kinda sad in retrospect something small probably stopped that from coming out and it would have completely changed a lot. Thats the best “new Kanye” project
i like it - probably more than most people
i think there is some filler and it does feel a bit bloated but i also think there are some undeniable standout moments on it
the whole "kanye is washed now" rhetoric that started because of the album is so dumb to me too - like, how can he be washed when songs like come to life, 24, believe what i say etc are all this late in his career
I used to fight against this but when people say that, it just means he isn’t his perfectionist self anymore and that’s true. I believe that 2004-2013 Ye would never let some of the verses he’s done on the album see the light of day.
Yeah. More than anything it's a conceptual tour de force. Every rapper is kept on target, several themes often revolving around different types of imprisonment, faith, Black identity, and lpve, loss and death emerge and swirl around one another. It's a depiction of Ye's headspace in the decade plus after the loss of his mother, the things she imparted in him. Everybody wanted it to be directly about his feelings regarding his mother, but for whatever reason it takes a more oblique path. But that path is conceptually sound and makes sense once you wrap your head around it.
Also has a nice trajectory from Jail to No Child Left Behind. It's actually well sequenced, especially at the beginning and end.
Love this
This is my favorite album. I think people get too upset about “filler” like Ok Ok Junya etc. This album has
Off the Grid
Jail
Come to Life
Pure Souls
Believe What I Say
Life of the Party
Never Abandon Family
Lord I Need You
Moon
Jesus Lord
No Child Left Behind
24
Heaven and Hell
Hurricane!!!!
This is like Kanye’s white album. 30 years from now people will consider this his best.
The filler deludes the quality of the album but in a scenario where Ye wouldn’t have done this delusional Drake beef and just released the best 15 tracks, a lot of people would have this album in their top 5 Ye projects.
Standard version > deluxe nonsense
That said I do agree with Anti that it’s almost too much to hold any one concrete identity. There are phases and moments but in the end it feels messy
Also, songs like Off the Grid, Praise God, Hurricane, and Heaven & Hell are aging like milk for me but that’s just a personal take
was never really a fan of the lyrical content in the album, but the music behind a lot of it is still top tier. Heaven and Hell is my favorite beat on there, there's so many things they did well there
Come To Life is overrated
New Again, Up From The Ashes, 24. Never Abandon Your Family, Life Of The Party & Heaven and Hell are the only songs I really still care to play now
Believe What I Say & Jail are decent but I don't care to go about tk them anymore
Lyrical content is a mess like any most 2015 Kanye project but not as terrible as Donda 2/Vultures lyrical content
I think some of the OG tracks were better than the finished, OG praise god from LP2 was special and so was OG new again w/ breezy

There's a few more tracks I like but I basically could have written this post
Kanye's best album post-2013 IMO, was really surprised by how much I liked it, felt like a full realisation of his Gospel-influenced sound
He then proceeded to fall off a cliff into depths previously unknown
The last classic of our modern era! Tracklist messy but some legendary s*** in there no lie

Those are the best songs
