I like this
Technique by New Order. It's got great pop tunes but it's also draped in melancholy. I'd check any album by the band they're one of the greatest synthpop bands ever

Bad is number one, by far. Probably the biggest and best pop album of all time in terms of hits - if not at least toe to toe with Thriller.
And Rhythm Nation second, my favourite Janet album. The Knowledge is so nasty
