but that didn't come at the cost of making fun music though
It doesn't now for artists who see the competition in a positive light.
You're kinda curving it tho. Yeah you see them having fun there but people like Grandmaster Flash were def competing in the city before they blew up
All the DJ battles and MC competitions.. like Flash was one of the founders of that tradition.....hip hops origin was still heavily competitive before the genre took off into the music industry and acts had to be the best to make it out
Flash and his crew were trying to be better than Afrika Bambataa and he was trying to be better than Kool Herc's crew. It's always been there.
He said this in Sample This, a documentary on Netflix
If those older rappers were more developed in their style they woulda been dissing tf outta each other them niggas aint like each other
Kool Moe Dee: “Kool Moe Dee in the place to be, nobody can rock the mic like me”
Melle Mel: Yo wtf did he just say?

Matter of fact Kool Moe Dee and LL Cool J was beefing

Alright I got my history f***ed up
I just thought it was block parties and rapping about “The Breaks” and “The Message”
It’s a funny era looking back
These are the people that made hip hop. Seems to me it’s about having a good time, but hip hop doesn’t need to be anything.
With that being said this s*** has aged like absolute crap 😂
