Follow Me Home was a personal classic for me, just peak west coast laced gangster rap with a conscious edge. Then 90059 was a great follow up that showed Jay Rock growing creatively alongside the others in TDE
After that everything turned to mid. His team somehow tried to commercialize his sound for some reason, probably trying to capitalize off his hit song with Future. His gritty delivery and energy became more absent and Redemption ended up being very disappointing besides the odd gems in there
He was poor man's game and didnt developped artistically
He is a dope rapper but there are like 100 other west coast rappers that sounds like him
Its impossible to make it just as a rapper these days. U gotta cross genres
I think he is a better rapper than nipsey was doe.
I think the balance between q, ken and jay was amazing and he couldve been way bigger if they worked as a trio more
Win was the worst thing to happen to him
Well he had to try to have a hit attempt even tho he wasnt cut for it
First, he got out the way and let Kendrick & Q eat when he was the artist lead head at the label
Second, he didnt work a whole lot after Q and Kendrick got settled
Then 3rd, when he did start working a lot for some time, he then got in a major motorcycle accident during his most consistent & mainstream (outside of the 1 year with Lil Wayne) era where he almost died, which completely took all his hype out due to recovery time and such
Now, hes just chilling and doing whatever for Top n Kendrick
Aside from that cringe inducing Jeremih song and maybe WIN (It grew on me), Redemption was a great album
Although I agree, 6 years for another Jay Rock album is ridiculous. And the fact that he went 0-4 on singles in 2023 has me worried how his newest album will turn out to be
idk did anything really go wrong
he's pretty successful for the type of music he makes
not bad for dropping a major label debut at like 35

He never made it out of the trailer park, he’s still hanging with Julian, Bubbles and Ricky.
But nothing went wrong persay
He is forever eating & doing ish behind the scene kinda like Memphis Bleak with Jay Z, while having a pretty good Rap career nd one of the few that have stood closely besides Wayne and Dre
He played his part & lifted the entire label up his shoulders
There is no TDE & their artists without Rock & Rock was the first to break out of West durimg our down period after Game & Mac Dre - even before YGs Toot it n Boot it in 2009 which made the West mainstream again, and a lil b4 Tyga
You could say there is no modern day West Coast without Jay Rock
Win was the worst thing to happen to him
One of the worst hooks I’ve ever heard
90059 was 9 years ago and he has dropped 1 project since then. I actually like a few songs off of Redemption but he did not build the cult fanbases you need to drop one album in a decade

TIL Jay Rock is 62 years old today

Yea I don’t understand the question
Dude is chilling. Of course, he could be a bit bigger, but after Kendrick and Q blew up he was basically the TDE vet which is fine

As someone whose been a Jay Rock fan since 2010, I agree with everything you said. Everything you listed is exactly the turning point of what went wrong with him during his career.
"Follow Me Home" will forever be his magnum opus.

Exactly this, it's not the 00s anymore. He's doing pretty well for himself.
He would have needed the best production out the group to make up for his lack of personality, wordplay, and storytelling Q, Soul, and Dot have.
